Album Review

The new millennium's surge of alt-metal acts and various punk-inspired groups nearly blurred the ideas of originality and credibility. Los Angeles' Home Town Hero emerged from the same scene as Hoobastank and Incubus, totally ignoring such theories. Their power pop spirit blended with an intensity similar to the likes of Stone Temple Pilots and Our Lady Peace, defining Home Town Hero's own stance in rock. First single "Questions" is a ballsy look into the band's tight rhythm section of bassist Todd Burnes, guitarist Drew Stewart, and drummer Ray Blanco. Frontman Aaron Bruno delivers tough, throaty vocals while turning to personal reflections. Post-grunge turns pop for the jaunty bounce of "Who's to Say" while "Run Right Through" is a frenetic metal blast. Home Town Hero isn't concerned with making music for the mainstream. They've tailored it to those who'll identify with them lyrically, leaving them to be thrown into the fray of current TRL hard rock favorites. Still, Home Town Hero exudes an honesty in this record. It's basic, but smart.

Much better than Hoobastank

So yeah, not many people will have heard of this band, especially if you live on the east coast, like me (although I probably saw them in concert about 6 times; the benefits of rocker friends). They are defunct now but this album remains one of the better of the little known rock groups of the 2000s. Probably not going to blow you away or change your life but it is cool, fun, and has just the right amount of grit. I'd recommend the whole thing.

Best tracks include - Say I do, Twelve Ounce, Run Right Through, Eighteen, Bleeds in Blue.

Home Town Hero's Aaron Bruno (vocals/guitar) and Drew Stewart (guitar) were teenage pals while attending SoCal's Westlake High School in the mid-'90s. They were also big fans of those who made that town a music scene years before — Rancid, Operation Ivy, No Doubt — and relished in '90s grunge heyday of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Green Day.
