Album Review

Pulse Ultra hovers around two of rock radio's biggest trends circa the 2002 release of their debut. On one hand, the post-grunge sweepstakes entry obviously came back a winner, with vocalist Zo sounding eerily like Bush singer Gavin Rossdale, especially on "Big Brother" and "Build Your Cages," with several other tracks containing a melodramatic crunch not far from what Creed does. Yet at the same time, the Montreal-based outfit borrows heavily from the more avant-garde styles of Tool ("Put It Off"), and other moments are more firmly rap-metal in nature ("Void" could be Incubus). While there's nothing wrong with drawing from many different sources — to be sure, the best music usually does — you still can't help but think of one thing when listening to Headspace: contrived. ~ Brian O'Neill, Rovi

Doesn't even matter but...

The guy who provides the "review" up above clearly writes for free. His review is way off base, and clearly allows some bias to com e through. This album is excellent from beginning to end. Sure there are underlying tones of well known bands like Tool, Taproot, etc, but that doesn't mean this album is "contrived". Give this album a listen because here I am 7 years later after purchasing it on release day still enjoying the hell out of it.

Finally I found some good original music to rock out to

This is a great original sound. I think the the album review that iTunes wrote gives it no justice. In no way should this band be compared to creed. this band sounds more like linkin park (old-school, when they were good) with a little tool mixed in. I might be wrong but all in all this album rocks!

There's a lot to this album

This is an underappreciated gem. Not only is the music amazing at face value, but listen to the first track and figure out what time signature they use. I'll cut out the guesswork for you-- it's 5/4 on the verses and 4/4 on the chorus. The impressive part of this is that many bands trying to do the same type of thing would be very obvious about it. Most listeners do not pick up on these subtle touches. This album is full of music that gets better with time. It's a shame they never released any more music.

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

While Montreal is known for its rave scene, native sons Pulse Ultra aimed for something harder. Childhood pals Dominic Cifarelli (guitar) and Jeff Feldman (bassist) were influenced by the post-grunge reign of bands like Limp Bizkit and the Deftones, therefore they designed Pulse Ultra with similar appeal. They spent the latter '90s gigging at local parties and competing in various showcases, but it wasn't until 1997 when the two befriended drummer Maxx Zinno. Zinno gave Pulse Ultra a refreshed outlook...
