Album Review

On the debut album by VAST, titled Visual Audio Sensory Theater, the listener is introduced to the many talents of one Jon Crosby. With its roots in Nine Inch Nails-like soundscapes and reminiscent of Type O Negative's mellower moments, the ingredient that sets VAST apart from its contemporaries is Crosby's experimentation with samples not yet touched upon in rock music. Some of the material sampled on the debut includes the Bulgarian Female Choir and the Benedictine Monks of the Abbey of Saint-Mauer, plus the use of an actual 18-piece orchestra, to boot. The album is an intimidating listen the first time, but the rich textures created are quite impressive, with standout tracks being "Here," "Touched," and "Temptation." Lars Ulrich of Metallica has praised the album as "one of the best debut albums I've heard in a long, long time," and lovers of ambient electro-rock will undoubtedly agree upon hearing Visual Audio Sensory Theater.

Musical Genius

By far, after taking a listen at all of VAST's other albums, this one is pure musical genius, moving so well within itself. Each song moves perfectly into the next, creating the feel of an opera, more than an album. It's extremely unique and focused sound and Crosby's haunting vocals make this one of the best albums I have ever heard in my life, comparable to Pink Floyd's "The Wall" in my humble opinion. Special mention goes to the songs "Dirty Hole," "I'm Dying," and "Temptation" for the extremely powerful flux of emotion that is carried within them.

Sad Songs Work!

Out of all the songs, Flames was probably the best one for me. It helped me get out of some tough times and got me back on my feet.

Very Diverse. Excellent For The Creative Type.

You can rock out to this with passion. It has meaning and diversity. Beautiful piece of fine art.

VAST is comprised of one man and one man only: Jon Crosby. The songwriter grew up in Humboldt County, CA, and was profiled as a promising guitarist in Guitar Player Magazine at the age of 13. He was nearly signed to the guitar-based label Shrapnel, but he turned down the offer and focused on honing his songwriting chops instead. Crosby soon left high school to do home study, and he began assembling a band in order to perform some demos he recorded all by himself, under...
