iTunes Review

Perhaps sensing that their unexpected detour into the mainstream was about to end, the Melvins went all-out for Stoner Witch, their second and final album for Atlantic. While Houdini felt like the Melvins’ version of a major-label album, Stoner Witch just sounds like a straight Melvins record. The band streamlined its studio team and brought onboard bassist Mark Deutrom. For the first time in years, the Melvins were a functional, democratic trio, and their triangulated chemistry is what brings Stoner Witch to life. “Sweet Willy Rollbar,” “Revolve,” “June Bug” and “Magic Pig Detective” exhibit the band’s tightest playing to date. After years of experiments in deconstruction, here they are simply a smoking-hot rock band. “Queen,” “Roadbull” and “At the Stake” are unrelentingly evil — arguably the most intense assaults since the trio’s early days. “Shevil” and “Lividity” bring the band full circle, uniting the weighty assault of the new band with the abstract drone of early works like Gluey Porch Treatments.

My favorite Melvins album....

Amazing band that brought sludgy, plodding, slow rock to the masses. This album is a great place to start if you've never heard them.

Revolve

I found out about The Melvins accidentally when Bob Rivers (Seattle KISW personality) put Revolve on his "Live at Bob's Garage" CD. This is a really good punk-metal-thrash band that is excellent in a live show. Much heavy rhythm. nuff said. I say their weighty drum and bass lines are as heavy as Pantera's. The guitar is really a rhythm instrument and is used less as a lead. Not to say there is no lead guitar in this band. There is and it is good too. Just not as polished as Dimebag or Kerry or the like.

This is a really good Melvins' album. If you have only one Melvins, this is the one to have. But hearing them live is superior.

slow, heavy, beautiful

The album that proves fast does not equal heavy. Like listening to Black Sabbath on vinyl...with a broken record player and a head full of whiskey.

Amazing band.

Biography

Formed: 1985 in Aberdeen, WA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

The Melvins were the first post-punk band to revel in the slow, sludgy sounds of Black Sabbath. Their music is oppressively slow and heavy, only without any of the silly mystical lyrics or the indulgent guitar solos; it's just one massive, oozing pile of dark slime. The Melvins' first record was released in 1987; they've released many albums since then, but it wasn't until 1993 that they went to a major label, thanks to their protégé, Kurt Cobain....
