iTunes Review

The Thermals attack everything with a punk rocker’s sense of power and aggression — and in the past their political insights were strongly bolstered by the angry strum. Their fourth album, Now We Can See maintains the Portland, Ore. duo’s previous recorded power (live, they perform as a trio) with their pop side gaining ground, even if the songs handle more death than usual. “When I Died,” “We Were Sick,” and “I Let It Go” do brave battle with the existential questions that have perplexed philosophers for centuries. Adding a harmony here and a tough guitar chord there, the Thermals turn what could be a bleak future into something worth banking on. The title track eschews literal words for a singalong jumble of nonsensical syllables to take the weight off Hutch Harris’ near amphetamine rant. “At the Bottom of the Sea” slows things to a midtempo, heart-swooning guitar churn that comes to a dramatic stop at the midpoint and eventually dissolves in swampy feedback. “When I Was Alive” immediately charges back at full force, showing why the Thermals are among the more impressive bands to emerge in the new century.

Customer Reviews

They Grow up so fast.

Remember when you'd come home from a sh*tty day of high school, go into your room and try to wash it all off with a good record? Then your folks would kick the door in and smack you around, wreck your stereo and put you down? Then one day you came home and someone had beat up your parents and turned the volume all the way up and you thought "Yeah, f**k you human race, you haven't won yet!" ? That was The Thermals. They're here to help. Buy this record and show your appreciation, they've sacrificed a lot for you.

Now WE can hear

The Thermals can do no wrong! They return to a more punkish sound on this album, but they still deliver soaring choruses and you can hear the band's push to evolve beyond what people think they should do, but without ever alienating their fans.

One of the best bands out there

Can't say enough how happy I am with this album. While not as rockin' as the The Body, The Blood, The Machine, the bands melodies and hooks are as catchy as ever. Highly recommended.

Biography

Formed: May, 2002 in Portland, OR

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

A Portland-based supergroup of sorts, the Thermals originally featured Kind of Like Spitting's Ben Barnett, the Operacycle's Jordan Hudson, and Hutch Harris and Kathy Foster of the twee/folk-pop duo Hutch and Kathy and the All Girl Summer Fun Band. The group formed in early 2002 as a way for its members to play just for the fun of it, but their insistent melodies and punk-inspired urgency quickly won them a local following. Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard became one of the Thermals' first fans...
