Album Review

Bouncing back from the setback of Sacrilecious, the Supersuckers recorded their most ambitious album with Must've Been High. Using their garagey, post-hardcore punk as a launching pad, they delve deeply into country, even recording with Willie Nelson on one cut. Tellingly, the Supersuckers sound their best when they go for a snotty update of cowpunk — compared with their metal and Stooges-obsessed contemporaries, the band sounds positively fresh with the little bit of twang. There are a couple of shaky moments, but overall, Must've Been High is an intoxicating concoction of fiery riffs, goofy humor and punk attitude.

Buy it if you like Cash, Hank Williams III or if you like non commercial pop country.

great album

i bought this the day it came out (like 12 years ago maybe more?) i was blown away. so many of these songs are songs that once you listen to them a bit you wont be able to stop whistling/humming/singing for a while (over a decade in my case). every supersuckers' show i've ever seen has been a rock show but i can imagine listening them perform songs from this album in a seedy austin bar (maybe "the poodle dog"?).

this was one of my favorite CD's for a long time. as a matter of fact, to punish me during/after a heated argument with my wife, this was the possession of mine that she pulled out to smash because she knew how much i loved it.

anyway, if you don't have it and you like both kinds of REAL music (country AND western) then buy this album.

For beginners and Experts alike....

Look, I'm not saying anything else than what EVERYBODY else says. Despite the disclaimer they wrote on the original CD booklet, 3 chord country rock rocks like a rock would rock if it was surrounded by, well, by a bunch of rocks...??

Something of an anomaly on the Sub Pop roster, the Supersuckers bore a limited surface resemblance to grunge, but they were a party band at heart, donning cowboy hats and kicking out a gleefully trashy brand of throttling, rockabilly-flavored garage punk. Their lyrics were a raucous, over-the-top celebration of all the attendant evils of rock & roll — sex, booze, drugs, Satan, and whatever other vices the band could think of, all glorified with tongue planted firmly in cheek....
