iTunes Review

While reggae has always been fundamental to Michael Franti’s musical identity, none of his albums have embraced Jamaican styles to the degree of All Rebel Rockers. Produced by Sly & Robbie and recorded almost entirely on location in Kingston, Franti’s sixth studio effort is more than an American pop album costumed in red, gold and green. All Rebel Rockers incorporates the sonic atmospheres and attitudes of dub and Dancehall. “Rude Boys Back In Town,” “A Little Bit of Riddim,” and “Soundsystem” have the bottom-heavy impact of deep dub, but underneath the surface are references to disco, early rap, and ska. The hybridization technique puts Franti in the company of the Clash, who came up with a similar sound in the early ‘80s. Meanwhile, “High Low,” “I Got Love For You,” and “All I Want Is You” exude the sexual chemistry of a late night club packed shoulder-to-shoulder. All experimentation aside, there is no reason why “Hey World (Remote Control Version)” and “Say Hey (I Love You)” shouldn’t be every bit as big as the Black Eyed Peas.

Um... I like Yell Fire too

Yell Fire is an amazing album, just as this is an amazing album, and I love Michael Franti's great message, and I love that he can write a great song with out any swears. Say Hey is such an neat song, but Yell Fire was a little bit better album....

Franti's Bringin' It

I'm not sure that I like this CD as much as Yell Fire! The Sly & Robby production got in the way of the more disco/funk that I liked about the last couple of albums and the Spearhead stuff. I love Reggae, and I liked Michael's spin on it, and the S&R stuff made it feel like it wasn't really Michael's voice behind the production... Also, what's up with his voice? Some of the tracks sounded like they grungalized him. Don't get me wrong tho... Michael Franti is one of the most relevant musicians alive today. His work in Iraq blows me away. BIg Spirit, Big Power. Always rocking.

Amazing!

Amazing! It's a pleasure to hear a singer with a unique sound and various song style. Why haven't I heard of him before now? I'm off to acquire all of Franti's albums.
