Album Review
Death From Above 1979 makes their considerable racket with only bass, drums, and the occasional Moog squelch assist. This isn't a gimmick — between Sebastien Grainger's frantic wail and the overdriven bass riffs of Jesse F. Keeler, the duo's You're a Woman, I'm a Machine pulses with a steady, sweaty energy that's punctuated with arena-sized hooks. "Blood on Our Hands" boils dance-punk nearly all the way down, leaving only a relentless hi-hat cymbal, while "Turn It Out" and "Cold War" churn on double-time rhythms and rudimentary, yet completely effective bass runs. The duo's setup certainly limits their range, which means the album can occasionally resemble one long song. But at just over a half-hour, it's over before any questions about the lack of guitars can even start to form. There are hyper indie rock flare-ups, like in the Hot Snakes/Rocket from the Crypt yelp of "Going Steady." And "Sexy Results" is a flirtatious and amplified cross of new wave and Rapture-style strut that comes complete with a cowbell upbeat. Preoccupation with the opposite sex provides some of You're a Woman, I'm a Machine's strongest moments, from Grainger's "I don't need you/I want you" clarification on "Romantic Rights" to the frenetic late-album standout "Pull Out." Other highlights include the title track's layered vocals and wiry punk revivalism, and the subtler "Black History Month," which is a nice break from the record's consistently jerking pace. In the 2000s, dance-oriented energy keeps creeping regularly into rock & roll. On You're a Woman, I'm a Machine, Death from Above 1979 makes people move by exposing the live-wire tension rock music had all along.

#1 ROUGH S*X SOUNDTRACK!!!!
I was lucky enough to discover this band early on and just couldn't believe how fresh and sick and sexy it was. You haven't lived (well, it depends) until your in a club, in the zone, head swimming in substances, and DFA '79 comes on super-loud and you grab your date and it's just the 2 of you there, no one else exists at that moment and you adjourn to the nearest bathroom stall, dark side of the club (or go home, DFA blasting on the stereo) and just eat each other alive....Death From Above 1979 is your soundtrack to all those other-worldly moments when things just cant get any better and you forget what this mortal coil's becoming...well, isn't that the purpose of all great music!?! get into this....& rejoice that they'll prob. never go (too) mainstream...it will stay your best-kept dark guitar-electro lust-drenched pin-eyed secret....
Majorly Rocking
At the suggestion of a friend, I bought this, but I kept taking forever to get around to giving it a full listen. At times, they remind me of Spoon, who rock a lot, and the album is nice and full-sounding. Noisy as hell, too. They also win points for use of FRIGGIN' COWBELL, the most underused instrument in the Drum Arsenal. In short, in a cage match between Death From Above 1979 (numbering 2, in total) and any number of other current rock bands, Death From Above 1979 would leave the ring wearing the skins of their opponants as Ed-Geinian jackets and socks. And I would pay top dollar to see that battle go down.
Think Different....
These cats are different indeed. If your a fan of Queens of the Stone Ages, or Clutch, check'em out. Very heavy bass, very fuzzy, and very all out rock. Get the head right and enjoy these sonically sound tunes!
