Album Review

The first domestically available Dio anthology (following the 1994 German import Diamonds), Rhino's The Very Beast of Dio is jam-packed with 16 tracks taken from the band's seven Warner and Reprise albums (spanning the years 1983-1994). Which is to say, it's an excellent overview of the band's career, especially given the unevenness of some of their albums. Ronnie James Dio honed his metal chops singing lead in both Rainbow and Black Sabbath, and his own band is sort of a reflection of both: the sinister, medievally gothic elegance of the former, and the crushingly heavy, doom-laden riffs of the latter. That combination, plus solid songwriting, made Dio's best work some of the most invigorating British metal of the '80s, and those qualities are best concentrated here.

RIP Ronnie James

You know, I didn't like Dio for the longest time. Maybe it's because I didn't think anyone but Ozzy should've sang in Black Sabbath. I can't imagine why. He was such a talented and awesome singer. It's a damn shame he had to leave us, but what he did for the music world as a whole far outweighs just his band. This is a collection of the songs he was most known for, and hopefully will be remembered for. These are the best. Thank you Dio for all you have given us. You will be missed!

Great, classic songs!

Dio was a great singer. I believe he is one of the most unknown talents of the 20th century. All of his songs have great vocals and instrumentals. This CD is great it has a great combo of all of his best! its a shame that he had to go but he will always be remembered through his music! RIP Ronnie James Dio!!!

Ronnie James Dio, RIP my Bro

Wow.....just seems like yesterday when I watched as Ronnie thundered away as an opening act for Iron Maiden in Germany, but that was so many years ago in the '80's---then again to witness his brilliance at "Das Tonhalle" in Munich just before Christmas. This guy was perhaps one of the most underplayed of all true metal icons. His voice was incredible, with wavering perfection on those long high notes and lyrics. A true master of dark metal in all respects. Ronnie, you will be sorely and sadly missed by your many thousands of fans......"Ruhe in Frieden, mein Bruder", or Rest In Peace, my Brother!

For a brief spell during the mid-'80s, the heavy metal quintet Dio were one of the top U.S. concert attractions, boasting one of the most over the top stage acts of its time loaded with props and special effects (lasers, explosions, a giant dragon, etc.). The group's leader was singer Ronnie James Dio, who had previously become acquainted with the metal masses as the frontman of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow from 1975-1978 and Black Sabbath from 1979-1982. Come the early '80s, Ronnie James was ready...
