iTunes Review
With Achtung Baby!, U2 redefined itself for the onset of the ‘90s. Zooropa, initially intended as a quick EP to kick off the European leg of the group’s Zoo TV tour, expanded with a rush of inspiration into a heady full-length album that features several of U2’s most inspired and intriguing moments. Cut with an ear towards breaking through the band’s power trio limits, Zooropa relies less on the patented chiming guitars of Dave “The Edge” Evans and submerges itself in paranoiac disco grooves, atmospheric electronic urges, and emotional climaxes where Bono sounds both exultant and suspicious of his jolly good fortune. “I feel like I’m holding onto nothing,” he sings on the heart-thumping “Lemon” and it’s unsure whether “nothing” denotes a new freedom (the music certainly celebrates) or means, literally, nothing. “Numb” swirls with a torrent of lyrics from The Edge while Bono cruises into a falsetto. Country legend Johnny Cash ushers in the spooky “The Wanderer” where the end of the world sounds nearly at hand as Cash sounds suspiciously as if he’s singing an odd variation on Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne.”

Dream Out Loud
Uncertainty can be a guiding light. It seems these words must have typed and hung on the Studio walls. An album full of sonic twists and turns Bono and the boys seem intent on getting lost in the woods. Delving deeper into the experimental sounds found and forged during the recording of Achtung Baby! U2 creat soundscapes with tunes and lyrics to match. In the midst of the 2 yr Zoo TV tour U2 ran in and out of the studio frantically trying to capture the nervous noise in their heads. Some call it mixed results but it's more likely those people were afraid to follow the band off the beaten path. Its a shame most of these songs have never been played live. Not because the band can't but because they fear that their audience wouldn't understand. I think they are wrong.
U2's Most Underrated Album
...and also their weirdest, but still, awesome! "Numb" was their most experimental song to date, "Zooropa" has 2 minutes of weird electronic sounds before actually starting into a song, "Lemon" shows Bono hitting the highest of notes, "Dirty Day" has an awesome bassline, and "The Wanderer" has Johnny Frickin' Cash! Totally worth it.
Ahead of Their Time
This album shows a side of U2 rarely seen or heard on other albums, and the listenability now in 2006, 13 years after it's release, proves just how ahead of their time U2 was with this album. Tracks like Stay (far away, so close), Lemon, Babyface, and Daddy's Gonna Pay for Your Crashed Car are instant classics, and after a few listens, you'll wonder why this album hasn't gotten the acclaim of some of U2's other well-known releases.
