Album Review

Expanding upon the themes of emotional and geographic isolation found in the band's previous work, This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About finds Modest Mouse mixing slow, brooding numbers such as "Custom Concern" and "Talking S**t About a Pretty Sunset" with thrashing guitar workouts like "Breakthrough" and "Head South." The general mood here is one of loneliness and desperation, eloquently expressed through both the lyrics and the rhythmic, sprawling instrumentation. "Dramamine," for instance, with its driving, mid-tempo beat and ricocheting guitar line, sums up the hopelessness of a doomed relationship, while the frantic "Head South" deals with the feeling of "being ashamed of your old space." The mandolin, slide guitar, and cello featured throughout the album give the songs a certain degree of depth that makes them stand out from average indie rock fare. In general, This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About is a fine album of guitar-based rock, and Modest Mouse distinguishes itself here with songs whose meanings are simultaneously universal and painfully personal.

Early Modest Mouse

For those of you who liked Float On, and want to become a deeper Modest Mouse fan...dont start with this album. Please. You will instantly wonder why you bought the album. Buy "Good News" first. This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About, Modest Mouse's first album is another one of Isaac Brock's lyrical masterpieces. Recorded immediately after Sad Sappy Sucker was originally finished, Modest Mouse's sound is still as experimental as before. By far, this CD captures Brock's inner feelings and most obscure thoughts. With lyrics like "I changed my mind so much, I cant even trust it/ My mind changed me so much I cant even trust myself," this is what Modest Mouse was all about before Moon & Antarctica and beyond. For die-hard Modest Mouse fans, who are accustomed to zany intrumentals, lyrics, and...breathing noises, this album shouldn't come as a surprise when the buyer hears the strange beats and lyrics. If you are a new Modest Mouse fan, let me say this, don't buy this album. Their older music tends to scare off listeners because they are so amazed at how different they sounded nearly 13 years ago. Modest Mouse's "...Nasty Parlour Tricks" is most likely the last album they released that had lyrics such as the ones in this album and others around this time. When "Moon" came out, it was evident that Modest Mouse, with Dan Galucci added to the mix, was changing their style (dont get me wrong I still love "Moon"). Good News is widely considered their most mainstream album, which is why I suggest you buy that one if you are a Modest Mouse noobie. Good News has solid, up-beat tracks, and of course the mellow and sad ones. Long ride however...different story. With that said, this is a masterpiece. Modest Mouse will never die. Not if they keep producing like they did here.

TIALDfSwNtTA is possibly my favorite album of all time. It's mellow and chaotic at the same time. Bipolar would be the best way to describe it because half of the time it makes you want to go sit in a rainy cafe and contemplate infinty while the other half is comprised of you wanting to smash fax machines and run cars into walls. If you're really into more mainstream stuff, don't buy this one. Yet. Try The Moon and Antarctica first and if you like it, go right ahead to this one. ENJOY FOLKS!!

Album # 5 for Me

It's funny, I've gone backwards chronologically with them, and it seems like I've gone from their worst to their best. We Were Dead is inferior to all their other works. I hope they can go back to their roots with the next one. The only thing I want to do in my life is meet Isaac Brock.
