iTunes Review
Honky Chateau (1972) is the pinnacle of Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin’s obsession with things American, not least because its themes are funny (“I Think I’m Gonna Kill Myself”) and personalized (“Amy,” a sly paean to young lust). Elton’s small group, augmented with some daredevil electric violin by Jean-Luc Ponty, adapts to everything from the New Orleans carousel music of “Honky Cat” to the Ray Charles-ready “Mellow” to the Band-informed “Susie (Dramas).” Similarly riding varied currents, the man himself does some of his best singing here; he’s positively funky on “Susie” and “Amy.” The team’s ears alert to many pop tongues, they commit some of Elton’s truest rock and roll. This remastered edition offers a bonus in the way of a Jerry Lee Lewis-style take on “Slave.”

Timeless Masterpiece! Must Have!!
by that_70sguyMona Lisa and Mad Hatters puts the icing on the cake for the movie "Almost Famous". Elton brings this magic and energy that sooths the soul. This album is a must have.
Underrated.
by peacefrogzMaybe the best Elton John album? I guess the most popular pick would be "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" but this one more than holds its own. "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" is the best song here. Maybe his best ever! I like the melody & lyrics of "Slave". "Susie (Dramas)" rocks as well & is very indicative of the time period. And the obvious "Rocket Man" is a haunting ballad among his Greatest Hits.
ELTON'S METAMORPHOSIS
by mattal1958This is the album where Elton transforms from the bluesy, brooding singer/pianist/songwriter to POP MUSIC KING...or soon to be KING. "Honky Cat," the bouncy, horn-laced almost rag time composition became a HUGE hit on the charts. "Rocket Man," the more seductive blues-meets-pop tale of an astronaut became even MORE HUGE. "Mona Lisa And Mad Hatters" is one of the best ballads Elton has ever composed (obviously, with Bernie Taupin's lyrics...Taupin being his lyricist from the beginning right on through the mid-70's...he would then work sporadically with and without him over the years, but that's another story). "I Think I'm Going To Kill Myself" is a funny, jaunty tap dance of a song, and one of my all-time favorite Elton songs. "Susie (Dramas)" is a catchy, bluesy piece of pop rock that got tons of airplay on FM radio in it's day. In short, this album is FULL of catchy songs, and is the true beginning of Elton John, Superstar of Pop Music.
Even greater things were yet to come.
