Album Review

The final release of the East Coast's quintessential hardcore punk band, Salad Days offers a glimpse into the future of Ian MacKaye's prolific recordings while maintaining the fire and rage of Minor Threat's initial albums. The three songs, slower than the band's previous tracks, are by no means slow, but do give MacKaye a chance to take his first tentative steps toward singing, moving beyond his signature blend of screaming and speaking. The cover "Good Guys Don't Wear White" is an amusing fit, while the music of the two originals is more inventive, as in "Salad Days," which uses acoustic guitar and chimes. MacKaye's lyrics are more pensive, like the line in "Salad Days": "So serious/about the stuff we lack/Dwell upon our memories/but there are no facts."

Where is Good Guys (Don't Wear White)?

The Salad Days EP has 3 songs, not two, and iTunes decided to leave out the best song on this EP and one of the best songs Minor Threat songs ever. The other two songs are also great, too, but please get Good Guys (Don't Wear White) on here, iTunes!

"Do you remember the time?"

This was the last record released by legendary hardcore band Minor Threat. The songs, like all of Minor Threat's material, are true and to the point. They painted the picture of a scene in decline and the good old days being in the past. The legend behind the "Salad Days" single and song is that Ian didn't even want to record it. It got to the point that the band was even talking but due to constant proding Ian came into inner ear and did the lyrics in one take. Not only is "Salad Days" a great song but Ian is singing it at the very people it was written for. It is a harsh, voltile moment captured on vinyl and now CD. Even down to their last days, Minor Threat wore their hearts and ethos on their shelves.

What'sthe Deal

Biography

Formed: 1980 in Washington D.C.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s

Minor Threat was the definitive Washington, D.C., hardcore punk band, setting the style for the straight-edge punk movement of the early '80s. Led by vocalist Ian MacKaye, the band was staunchly independent and fiercely sober. Through their songs, the group rejected drugs and alcohol, espoused anti-establishment politics, and led a call for self-awareness. Every song was fast, sharp, and lethal, often clocking in at just around a minute. Their speed and fury often hid their fairly catchy melodies,...
