Give Me All You Got

Give Me All You Got

Carrie Rodriguez's rise in prominent Americana circles has been expected and justly deserved. Her violin work with Chip Taylor brought out the best in both of them and gave Rodriguez firsthand insight into the art of songwriting from a legitimate pro ("Wild Thing," "Angel of the Morning"). Lessons learned, she's been issuing her own records with admirable consistency. (Taylor is a guest here.) Produced by Lee Townsend (Bill Frisell, Kelly Joe Phelps), Give Me All You Got features atmospheres that enhance the writing. The single "Tragic" couldn't sound warmer or more inviting, with guitars that pulse beside her tale of distress. "Cut Me Now" adds orchestration that turns the sound into something one might associate with U2, far beyond whatever Americana tags once stuck. Even a tune like "Whiskey Runs Thicker Than Blood" has a sophistication and style beyond the usual hallmarks. "Brooklyn" addresses her hometown of the past decade with a playful sense of style. "I Don't Mind Waiting" is a fitting acoustic closer.
