iTunes Review
2004's most unlikely comeback album was the work of a country music immortal, assisted by a talented admirer. Forty-Four years after her first hit, Loretta Lynn returned with the Grammy-winning Van Lear Rose, a darkly passionate reworking of her Coal Miner's Daughter persona. With songs written by Lynn, this collection has both the raw emotion of a classic honky-tonk recording and the searing edge of a modern alt-country album. Among the album's many highlights are the autobiographical title track, the drinking duet "Portland Oregon," the harrowing "Women's Prison," and the rollicking revenge tune "Mrs. Leroy Brown." Lynn sings with the poignancy that made her a star in the '60s, spurred on by producer Jack White's biting guitar lines. Van Lear Rose is at once trendsetting and timeless, returning Lynn to the pinnacle of American country music.

Fantastic
I'm an avid fan of both Lynn and The White Stripes, and this album meets somewhere pleasantly between both genres of music played by its contributing artists. Jack White provides to Lynn's country sound his own signature bluesy, garage-rock style, one that compliments the album's southern sound nearly perfectly. Songs like "This Old House" and "Women's Prison" show Lynn's impecable knack for song writing, while up-beat tunes like "Have Mercy On Me" and "Mad Mrs.Leroy Brown" keep the album interesting and not ovrewhelmingly country. A must-have for any music fan.
The Queen Returns!!
The best country songwriter of all time, besides Merle Haggard and Buck Owens, is a special little lady named Loretta Lynn. She's a brilliant songwriter, (this is the second album where she's penned all the tracks) and all the songs on Van Lear Rose are terrific and Jack White does a great job producing. I wish people who claim not to like true country music would listen to a BEST OF LORETTA LYNN disc to hear exactly why she's the best of all time. Her voice (at age 70) has lost none of its effectiveness, and these new songs deserve a place next to her classics like "Rated X," "Fist City" "One's on the Way," "The Pill" and "Coal Miner's Daughter." The songs are dark and fun to listen to, and have a definite women's perspective (sometimes feminist) just like her classics. I dare someone who listens to music as good as this not to become a convert. God Bless you, Loretta Lynn! Let's hope you make a few more great albums in your 70s!
The Meaning Of Country Music...
Country Music encompasses so many different styles, approaches and ranges. Country Music has Always Been about Lyrical Intimacy... No Genre of Music Tells Stories Quite Like Country Music. As The Genre has Drifted a bit into Pop Commercialism, Seemingly More About Image Than Substance... Loretta Lynn's "Van Lear Rose" Reminds us of What Country Music Is. Explorative. Intimate. Naked & Raw. Jack White Serves as a Perfect, yet Perhaps Unexpected, Partner in this Effort... Though None Should Be Surprised. This Album Represents The Reason Songwriters Exist.
