Album Review

Rob Crow and Armistead B. Smith IV continue to create complex indie pop with smart, subtle structures on Pinback's Offcell. Vocal tracks harmonize, electronics punctuate, guitars punch clean, key changes shift quickly, and syncopated drums all swirl in the thick instrumentation, giving Offcell many dimensions. The members of Pinback write their own material that covers different areas, including the straight-ahead pop of "Microtonic Wave," angular prog rock of "B," and guitar-driven loopy Folk Implosion sound of the title track. "Victorious D" shows off the angular post-rock smarts of Pinback. Driving bass pumps along, while keys change and the keyboards accent sentimental vocals. "Grey Machine" is a catchy, repetitive gem that rounds out Offcell. This track has a different feel from the rest of the record, offering big drums against layers of vocals, keyboards, guitars, and programming, sounding like a mellow Built to Spill. Each of the tracks has interesting electric outro melodies that are thrown in for fun; some lead into the next track, while others leave you wondering where that melody could have landed. Possibly the future of Pinback? Perhaps. But Pinback doesn't stray too far from its previous work; all of the tunes are enjoyable and never get boring. If you are familiar with Pinback, Offcell is good, but doesn't break new ground.

Customer Reviews

$3.99 is a STEAL!!!

If you've seen any of my other reviews of this band, this should come as no big surprise. This ep was one of the first times I had ever bought an ep that got as much play as a full-length album - by ANY band. Seriously, you can put this on and let it repeat for just-about-ever... -Microtonic Wave became a quick favorite of mine, showing a serious arrangement with one of the best finishes ever. If you like this tune, you GOTTA hear it live! -Victorious D was a song by ABSiv (the bass player) that he used to play live a lot. They've done it justice here, carrying the power of the live performance into the studio. -Offcell shows the mechanical side of Pinback that quickly turns into something sweet when Rob gets to that chorus. -B... what can I say about B? B could be one of my favorites by this band. Every time I hear it, it takes me back to the Che Cafe days when this was a regular in the live set. Awesome bass lines, showcasing the prolific talents carried over from ABSiv's previous band, Three Mile Pilot - superb... -Grey Machine is more of a story than just a mere song, with perfect arrangements, changes, and transitions that reinforce the genius of these musicians. Please, don't feel like buying 5 songs is in some way less important than buying a full-length. I know some people may say, "Why just buy a 5 song ep?" Well, these could be some of the best by this band - and $3.99 is a complete deal - you won't be disappointed!

One of the Best EPs Yet

Very good representation of what Pinback can do and is capable of doing; Rob Crow has been in a mixture of bands all worth listening to. Check out Systems Officer (Armistead Burwell Smith IV's solo) too, best EP I've ever heard.

Given Offcell Some love

Their were not many reviews for offcell, so I thought pitch in my two cents (would pitch in lots more for this EP though). Awesome EP, some great experimenting with different sounds for Pinback, not quite as smooth Blue Screen Life, but a step ahead (still a step ahead of the newer Summer in Abaddon). Everything Pinback does is great though and Offcell is no exception. Don't be turned off because it's a little different, crank up offcell and let the bass take you over. thanks

Biography

Formed: 1998 in San Diego, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

While a rotating cast of instrumentalists find loose assembly under the Pinback name, the partnership of Armistead Burwell Smith IV and Rob Crow is at the heart of the some of the most complex, postmodern indie pop happening on the West Coast. In the first few days of 1998, Armistead Burwell Smith IV (of San Diego-based Three Mile Pilot) and Rob Crow (of Thingy and Heavy Vegetable) formed a part-time recording project under the name Pinback. The simple plan grew more involved while Three Mile Pilot...
