iTunes Review

After several indifferent releases, INXS strode confidently onto the world stage with 1982’s Shabooh Shabooh. Just about everything about this confident, sometimes daring album works, from its oblique lyrics to its dense yet luminous production. Michael Hutchence exudes charisma as he preens, teases and intones his way through these tracks. INXS locks into primal grooves on “The One Thing,” “Old World New World,” and “Soul Mistake,” throbbing and undulating with cold, lethal grace. “Here Comes” and “Black and White” twitch with a case of the New Wave jitters, while “Spy of Love” moves within a cloud of icy atmosphere. The jaunty “Jan’s Song” hints at a Jamaican dub influence. The album’s clincher is “Don’t Change,” a surging modern rock anthem propelled by Andrew Farriss’ powerhouse synthesizer. Shabooh Shabooh is rhythm-driven, yet manages to flex enough muscle to transcend the confines of the dance floor. It ranks among INXS’ most convincing and provocative releases.

The best album of 1982!!!

With 1970's Funk and R&B influence and laden with sweet hooks thru-out, 1982's Shabooh Shoobah was INXS' best produced (by Mark Opitz) album to date. This is the album that broke INXS out of Australia and into the world-wide music scene. Hits "Black and White," "The One Thing," and "Don't Change" were staples in New Wave clubs worldwide. With this album INXS' instrumentation, especially the keyboard and guitar, really start to gel together. Gary's bass and Jon's drums lay down a sweet funk soul foundation that pushes the beat forward with fills that are perfectly timed and oh, so tasty. Kirk's sax and Andrew's keyboards add a lushness (and the occasional off-beat quirkiness) to the melody and to the overall sound that accentuates Michael's strong vocal performance. All the while Tim's guitar keeps things funky and driving forward. The songs "Golden Playpen," "Here Comes," "Soul Mistake" and "To Look at You" are the more rock oriented songs on this album. Those rocker songs hint to what was to come two albums later on Listen Like Thieves. The arrangement of the songs on the Shabooh Shoobah album makes for a great listening party experience. Shabooh Shoobah is one of the very best albums released in 1982, if not The best. A must for '80's music fans and INXS fans!

I owned this record. My friends and I would listen to this album while enjoying the many flavors of the 80's. It is just a good classic to have in your 80's collection. Makes me feel good to listen to this. We all need to feel good so give this a try.

Fabulous Album

INXS at it's finest. There is not one song I don't like on this album. For this genre, it's perfect listening. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys vintage INXS.

INXS hailed from the pubs of Australia, which is part of the reason the band never comfortably fit in with new wave. Even when they branched out into synth pop on their early recordings, they were underpinned by a hard, Stonesy beat and lead singer Michael Hutchence's Jagger-esque strut. Ultimately, these were the very things that made INXS into international superstars in the late '80s. By that time, the group had harnessed its hard rock, dance, and new wave influences into a sleek, stylish groove...
