Album Review

While its cut-and-paste, two-color cover art might suggest that Five is the work of a gritty punk rock shock squad, it's actually a five-song EP from Don't Look Down, a New Jersey quartet that proves itself strikingly adept at the kind of hook-laden pop-punk plied by MXPX, Jimmy Eat World, and Starting Line. Dueling guitars, anthemic tempo shifts, crashing drum fills, pleading, high-pitched lead vocals — they're all here, packed into four electric rockers and one acoustic ballad (that last one will definitely have the girls swooning). It's true that Five is derivative. But is this Don't Look Down's fault? Theirs is only the latest expertly crafted pop-punk record to be issued in a genre chock-full of expertly crafted pop-punk records. And they are only the latest quartet of interchangeably handsome dudes with cool tattoos and all the right surf and skate sponsorships. There's no reason why DLD and Five shouldn't appeal to fans of the above bands; at the same time, there's nothing really separating these guys from their peers. It's a good thing their name is emblazoned across the front of the disc.

Customer Reviews

5 Stars for the album Five

Love this band...How can you not? To any other fans of this band who have not yet gotten a song on this album I'd say that you should buy "Wake Me"...It's easily the best song on the album (in my opinion of course)

Can You Hear Me?

I can definetly hear these guys, and they are truly awesome. The guitars are so intracite, the drummer is insane and the lyrics are different.

Awesomeness

If I must say, this is awesome. The drummer for this band was my drum teacher and showed me these songs. I so totally love this band. You have to get this.

Biography

Formed: 1998 in New Jersey

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Pop-punk quartet Don't Look Down included vocalist/guitarist Ryan Ogren, guitarist Matt Emburgia, drummer Tom Parker, and bassist Jesse Rendell. Formed in New Jersey in late 1998, the band was soon playing covers at local all-ages punk shows. This exposure led to higher-profile opening gigs and interest from surf and skate companies that offered all-important sponsorships. DLD signed with Iguana in 2000 and issued Start the Show two years later. Well in line with the work of influences like MXPX...
