Album Review

An odds-and-ends collection of rare B-sides, recasts of older tracks, and one live number, The Roads Outgrown also serves as a good brief introduction to the latter period of a band that has undergone significant stylistic change over the course of its existence. "Lay Me Down," the opening song, is the keeper of the bunch, with its bottoming-out bass drum rumbling underneath a hopelessly forlorn violin. There's also a worthy cover of Will Oldham's "New Partner" and a soaring live version of "Fitzcarraldo," one of the band's best songs.

Customer Reviews

Good though unnecessary

This collection of Frames tunes has some very fine songs, but as a whole it is not fully representative of their other work. "Lay Me Down" can be found in this same version on their album "For the Birds". "Headlong" can also be found there but this recording is slightly different and enjoyable. The two best songs in this collection are "New Partner," and "Listen Girl." Both are folk songs that flourish in their simplicity. "God Bless Mom" is a good song, but this recording fails to capture the energy and beauty of the song.

Unbelieveable album

Makes you remember why you ever loved listening to music in the first place. The live track 'Fitzgeraldo' (influenced by the Werner Herzog film of the same name) is both moving and exhilerating ending with the vocal: "This is the best life a man could ever want." If you'e not heard the Frames, this is a good starting point.

One of those copies made its way to Island Records' Denny Cordell, who successfully lobbied label founder Chris Blackwell to sign Hansard to the roster. Now signed to a major label, Hansard founded the Frames, taking the name from...
