iTunes Review
Johnson’s second album keeps the mellow acoustic grooves and laid-back approach fully intact. Yet, he also tackles a wider range of subject matter, much of which is hardly pleasant at all. Tracks like the reggae-inflected “The Horizon Has Been Defeated,” the solemn “Traffic in the Sky,” and the gently delivered “Gone” are “anti-bling” warnings against materialism, over-development, and capitalist values. “Holes to Heaven” seems to have been inspired by a trip to India. On tracks like these, Johnson’s appeal is in his ability to make your medicine go down smoothly. He may be sugarcoating the more unsettling messages, but he’s still getting them down. Tracks such as “Tomorrow Morning,” “Cupid,” and “Wasting Time” are effortless little love songs, effective thanks to their economy and guilelessness. Also here is the infectious “Rodeo Clowns,” a song written by Johnson but first recorded by pal G. Love when Johnson was still mainly a surfer.

A Pro's View: This is FRESH!!!
I was born in L.A., but moved several years ago to North Idaho to relax a little. I now teach guitar and music theory privately. I play and teach all styles, but I usually will be found in the Blues neighborhood. With over 30 years under my belt, I've found that it's gotten more and more difficult to find any new stuff that gets my attention. As a teacher I've been forced to teach kids many tunes which defy the definition of "music." It seems that all they want is the pounding, pulses of distorted "power chords" by bands with numbers in their names, and arms full of ink. I had all but given up on the future of substantive music. Then one day, a little 12 year old girl came to her lesson and handed me a Jack Johnson CD. I gave it a listen, and found my SALVATION! Jack's music is LOADED with peaceful, but serious IN-THE-POCKET substance, and insightful slice-of-life lyrics with universal appeal. All you music hopefuls pay close attention to this man, because he's a perfect example to follow if you want to learn how its done. This dude is FOR REAL! Great work Jack!!!!
You'll Wish It Went On And On
Jack Johnson has created yet another work of art and in this CD sets his mood and attitude that has followed him for his whole carrier. The sounds are mellow and he brings out the points he would like to make. This CD is a must have for any listener who like mellow, up to beat or just good plain old music. I highly recomend this CD and appreciate Jack for all his work.
this is true music.
i love jack johnson so much ...man he really gets it... what music is meant to be about. he sings about what life is really like and his lyrics are so amazing in this album. trust me, it's definitely a worthy one.
