Some may not get it...

Some newer Of Montreal fans usually don't know that the band usually follows each popular new album with a low-fi, and usually silly album. Some may think that Of Montreal is putting out sub-par albums but this is just how the band does things! Each album has it's brother and separates Of Montreal into it's two faces as a band.

Of Montreal Will Protect Us

Kevin Barnes has more melody than he knows what to do with. Not the most inventive Of Montreal album, but excellent none the less. Barnes' attention to composition and knack for writing strong pop songs result thick walls of infectious sound . Glorious sunrise harmonies abound in the flowering field that is Big Oil. The lyricism is on point, the production polished; you can feel how comfortable Barnes' is in his craft. Where Hissing Fauna ventured into funky, electronic territory, Big Oil is firmly planted in the complicated progressive pop that garnered much of Montreal's success in the first place. I must add that a lot of the beatnik experimentalism of Coquelicot is present here as well, frantic verbal craziness out of nowhere. This feels like a release for fans, and most likely won't garner much attention, but is a captivating album none the less. Many listens will reveal those intricities that make Montreal a pleasure to listen to over and over again.

the more montreal, the better

this album is not as sonic and intriguing as hissing fauna, which i think is the best album of 2007 hands down...but it is simple, stripped down, and melodic in wonderful ways. i enjoy the funky/ electronic version of montreal has been delivering much more, with the soaring and distorted vocal sounds of mr. barnes at his best (satanic panic, sundlandic, hissing fauna). that said, anything he puts out is worth it's weight in gold, his sound grows and grows on you. Cast in the Haze, Friends of Mine, and Maple Licorice are my favs here. thank you mr. kevin barnes and all the of montreal members...you are the best thing going!!

The brainchild of singer/guitarist Kevin Barnes, Of Montreal was among the second wave of bands to emerge from the sprawling Elephant 6 collective. A native of Athens, Georgia, Barnes was inspired to form the euphoric indie pop group in the wake of a broken romance with a woman from Montreal. He signed with Bar/None Records while living in Florida, subsequently moved to Cleveland and Minneapolis in search of compatible bandmates,...
