Beautiful voice, wonderful songs, beautiful girl

Beautiful Voice On Its Way

Rachel Millman grew up in the '90s and you can hear it. These four songs are brimming with the earnest clichés and never-reluctant complaining that won The Backstreet Boys and Celine Dion the hearts of all American suburban girls (and many boys) born between 1983 and 1989. The hooks are melodic and memorable, and though the only line that really makes an impression on me is "missing the rose colored glasses you let me look though," the lyrics on this offering are certainly '90s radio-ready.

The production on this disc is clean, strong and rarely overdone. The band sounds tight, the synths don't add too much cheese, and some of the guitar lines are stylistically dead on (especially on Throwing Rocks). The only consistent disappointment in the production is actually the backup vocals, which are surprisingly loose and distracting in such a quantized context. Don't mind his voice, just think it could have been tracked more meticulously. Of course, it's not such a big deal considering...

Rachel Millman has a fantastic voice. If you enjoy pop music, you can't deny that this young woman has serious talent and audible ambition. Every word is instantly understandable without being unnaturally articulated, every note is infused with her beautiful, empathetic tone, and her versatility and range is apparent and almost always in proper employ. It's her debut and she impresses on every song.

Now, how does all this come together as a cohesive debut, and what can we hope to expect next from this rising songstress? It seems to me that aside from showcasing worthy vocals and personality, this debut is like most: a new artist working things out, finding a comfortable sound to offer the world to find out what it thinks. Well, I think now that she's gotten her demons ('90s) out of her system, Rachel Millman needs to focus on her writing. Pop music is having a renaissance of sophistication right now. The clever, charged poetry that made the pop and rock music of the sixties and even the seventies, that was generally eschewed by chart-toppers of the eighties and nineties, is back with a different flavor and greater aesthetic challenges (in light of half a century of additional political and artistic developments). I would love to see a sophomore release -- even if it's just a single -- that gives this silky voice some really good, sophisticated, poetic, EDGY material with truly BADASS hooks to work with. No more soggy songs. I want to hear an album wherein even the least impactful line doesn't miss the opportunity for internal rhyme, let alone the most impactful ("those rose" instead of "the rose"). She will make it in the music world if she can put together songs she feels dangerous and powerful singing. Rachel has an acting background as well, and I never hear her digging into the text on this release because she knows deep down that the words she's singing lack risky and careful crafting. However, with a voice like hers bringing to life some spicIee tunes, we will certainly be hearing a lot about Rachel Millman. For now, the straightforwardness of Waiting For Someday, desperateness of Throwing Rocks, hopefulness of If I Believe, and adorable attempt at heroism of Hold On will keep me patiently curious as to what's to come.
