A listen beyond compare!
The second release from the unknown Scott-David Allen. From start to finish, this album is entrancing. Lyrically speaking, you can completely relate with the deep, truthful words that are sung in a manner that puts most other vocalists to shame. musically, it has a perfectly saturated undertone, simply because ACOT doesnt have anything to hide, amidst the sea of countless track layering that so many artists hold dear to. Every song pierces deep into the human soul, there is a balance in Scott's work, much like any other craftsman... it weighs perfectly in all regards. There is subtle reminiscence of Peter Murphy's solo work riddled throughout the album, every time i hear "Lonely, Like A Satellite" i am reminded of Murphy's "Marlene Dietrich's Favourite Poem". Need i say this album is a must? just for the record though... i highly recommend it! do yourself a favor, you will not be disappointed with your purchase.
A Pleasant Surprise
Having never heard A COVENANT OF THORNS before, I bought this album on a whim. What a pleasant suprise! Though there's nothing here the average listener of synthpop hasn't heard before, If The Heavens Should Fall is quiet wonderful. "State Of Mind" and "Only A Priest" are reminiscient jewels of the best the genre offers. Of course, every synthpop band will forever be compared to the almighty Depeche Mode, but Scott-Allen David offers a more, how shall I say, soft approach to the genre. There dosen't seem to be any posing here, just honest musicality. To state it best, this album fills a room nicely. Give it a chance and you'll find that this album will find a nice place for itself in your collection.
Stunning
From start to finish, this album is a triumph of human emotion. Sure, musically, it's all been done before by other synthpop acts, but never with such stark poetry and clean wonder. It's impossible to describe the catharsis induced by this wonderful work of art. A Covenant of Thorns is a vastly underappreciated act which gains only obscure attention, a mystifying fact to me personally. It's stuff like this that got me to appreciate synthpop to begin with, as I'm usually more into heavy metal or prog rock. If anyone needs convincing that this is one of the most sublime electronic releases of the 21st century, just listen to "State of Mind," "Angel (How Can I Go On)," "Serafina," or "Only a Priest."
