Though their name screamed “New Wave,” Huey Lewis & the News were an old-school rock combo from the start. Their sound was a sturdy fusion of bar-band rock and classic R&B, given focus by Lewis’ blues-tinged vocals and Regular Joe demeanor: the band avoided excess and reveled in its seeming un-hipness. Whatever their level of cool, this best-of collection reaffirms how catchy their music could be. Lewis and his cohorts excel in short, sharp tunes with a slightly humorous twist; they emphasize melody over instrumental showboating and rarely wallow in downbeat sentiments. From the feisty blue collar rock of “Couple Days Off” to the bouncy club groove of “I Want a New Drug” and the harmony-driven “Do You Believe in Love,” these songs turn modest intentions into positive virtues. Lewis has a talent for crafting anthems for the average guy — tunes like “The Heart of Rock & Roll” and “Hip to Be Square” gently mock ‘80s-era trendiness. When he chooses, Huey can shift into soulman mode, as “Doing It All for My Baby” and “Cruisin’” (a sleek duet with Gwyneth Paltrow) show. There’s little flash or swagger in these tracks — just high-grade, heartfelt pop/rock build to last.
