Album Review

This early Solomon Burke album is named for the opening cut, his take on Wilson Pickett's "If You Need Me," which was a successful single for Burke, almost reaching number one on the R&B charts. Recorded between late 1959 and early 1963, these mostly mid-tempo songs find Burke's somewhat gritty pleas at home in sultry, bluesy surroundings ("Send Me Some Loving") and sweetened up for the occasional exotica-tinged arrangement ("Tonight My Heart She Is Crying"). It's unfortunate that the sound was not remastered for the late-'90s reissue by Sequel.

HOME IN YOUR HEART

it defies reason that Home in your heart isn't one of the top 5, if not number one, favorite Burke track. for the casual downloader, i can not stress enough that it may be one r&b's GREATEST hidden treasures

Underappreciated

It seems most people overlook Solomon Burke. Even among those who do not, his early work is never brought into focus. "If You Need Me" contains some elements that would go on to define soul music, even if none of these particular tracks as a whole are monumental. An excellent selection for the price.

While Solomon Burke never made a major impact upon the pop audience — he never, in fact, had a Top 20 hit — he was an important early soul pioneer. On his '60s singles for Atlantic, he brought a country influence into R&B, with emotional phrasing and intricately constructed, melodic ballads and midtempo songs. At the same time, he was surrounded with sophisticated "uptown" arrangements and was provided with much of his material by his producers, particularly Bert Berns. The combination...
