Album Review
With their 2005 effort You'll Rebel to Anything, the synth-punk explosion known as Mindless Self Indulgence reached maturity. Maybe that's not a word you'd usually apply to these spastic pranksters but when a band goes from simple short punk songs to intricate studio constructions, it's fitting enough. You'll Rebel was just so freaking good it was reissued in an expanded edition just three years later, the same year the brand spanking new — emphasis on "spanking" — If arrived following the same blueprint as its predecessor and coming up short in comparison. When leader and lead singer Jimmy Urine screams "There's nothing you can do that I haven't already done to myself" on the opening "Never Wanted to Dance" he's as believable as ever, and the ridiculously busy, crunchy, and loud backing track is the kind of riveting, kick-ass fist pumper the band has come to master. The brilliant "Lights Out" wedges a stately reading of the band's unofficial motto — "Punch your lights out/Hit the pavement/That's what I call entertainment" — into an otherwise furious hardcore song, and when "Issues" drops "I want a lot of profanity/With a lot less virginity" it's the kind of thing cretin dreams are made of, but the problem with If isn't the highlights. Three years of watching their extremely loyal fan base grow while brokering exclusive deals with the corporate goth retailer Hot Topic has made Urine and his cohorts a little too comfortable. The fact that "Mark David Chapman" was written with the fans' guidance — an innovative and not so great idea made possible by the Internet — ends up a big fat metaphor for how exclusive the album feels, giving the loyal fans what they want and forgetting about any broader communication. Email the band the name of the jock who pushed you over and they'll damn him in a song, or at least that's the way it feels during the rather routine filler. MSI aren't the first band to coast a little and preach to the choir after a knock-out album — and they certainly won't be the last — but the best parts of If cast light on how freakishly wonderful the band can be when trying to shock us all and not just those on their mailing list.

Great MSI Album, Track by Track Review
As they keep churning albums out, you can really sense their musical style maturing, evolving if you will. Some may still yern for the days of Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy (inexplicably abest from iTunes), but I welcome this change. I've had my physical Deluxe Edition Copy of this album before I noticed it was on iTunes, and I think I've given it enough listens to come up with a decent track by track review of the songs for you cheap bastards that don't wanna buy the whole thing (which I highly recommend). Never Wanted to Dance - Really fun and catchy, obvious single material 10/10 Evening Wear - Another winner, interesting use of piano. Has a pretty unique sound that I really like10/10 Lights Out - One of my favorites, catchy chorus, another great track 10/10 Prescription - Good track. Starts out a little boring, but picks up 9/10 Issues - Decent Track, I like the beginning because of the funny way Jimmy talks, but the chorus is kinda meh. 7/10 Get It Up - Very funny track, catchy too. Obviously about sex, another fav 10/10 Revenge - I like some parts of it (basically the first min), but it gets a little mediocre at times. One of the albums only flaws, but they all can't be gold, so it's ok 7/10 Animal - Fantastic Track. Probably my second favorite. It's extremely catchy to me. If you have the time, check out the music vid on youtube or something, it's really cool 10/10 Mastermind - Very beat-heavy, but it's a very good beat. It was the first single, and some people say it's a little Linkin Park-ish with the screaming, so may not appeal to hardcore MSI fans, but still definately listenable 9/10 On it - Fast-paced, yet slightly repetitive. Pretty interesting song though 8/10 Pay For It - Another interesting use of Piano. Unique track, a bit drum and bass-ish actually but very good 9/10 Due - Decent track. I kinda had to have it grow on me through a couple listens before I really appreciated it 8/10 Money - A little like older MSI songs. Overall solid track, but I still had to give it a few listens before really liking it 8/10 Bomb This Track - Others may not agree, but this is my favorite on the album. I had the demo a while before the album came out and was happy to see that now others will be able to hear it. Nice and Energetic. I especially love the crazy electronic part in the last minute or so 10/10 Mark David Chapman (MDC on iTunes for legal reasons I assume) - The infamous fan-made (as in, Jimmy made it with advice from fans on what it should sound like and stuff like that) song created last year or something. Bizzare, yet brilliant. Catchy too 10/10 Really, this album is worth buying as a whole. I pre-ordered deluxe and got a cool shirt. If you get a phyiscal copy, the album art is pretty cool too (jhonen vasquez is great and there's a neat-o comic with the character on the mastermind single cover), but you're not missing out on THAT much if you just buy it here (although MSI will probably get more $$$ if you order it from their site). As I said, highly recommended. It's a different sound in a way, but it's still very good!
It must be your face.
Nuff said.
MSI's best effort to date
In my opinion, MSI is the best techno rock band in existence. extremely catchy songs and great dance beats along with clever and funny lyrics are what make this band so unique and fun to listen to. no song is boring. i feel that with this album, theve matured just a tiny bit. i like that now they dont have the vast majority of their songs under 2 minuets. theve expanded their sound and broadend their musicality. this is my personal favorite of all MSI albums, and as a fan, i can say im very impressed with what they have become.
