Right on Time
For myself, I've found Ryan Adams to be my most influential and loved singer/songwriter of my generation (in opinion, 1 of the all time greats) The release of this double feature is a sheer gift. With no humility I say being a fellow Alchoholic/addict in active recovery, it's refreshing to have a human being (including the Cardinals) like this an inspiration, avenue to hope, testament to strength and a totally unashamed view into his experiences. It's not often you get an Artist unafraid of putting himself/herself out there with nothing but conviction and beautiful honesty. Being the same age as he, also knowing that it doesn't matter what color the grass is on the other side of the fence, all that matters is its our choice to build the fence in the first place makes me very appreciative and thankful for him to break down all fences with everything he's given of himself. This Album came when it was supposed to....right on time. I'm glad he didn't let his "best thinking" take him over....In other words, It's great to have this kind of beauty avialable in the breakdown.
not so interesting as a rocker
Ryan Adams obviously loves to play rock and roll, but as a straight rock and roller I find him considerably less on-the-money then in his more eclectic work, where he tends to display greater inventiveness and space in his songs and arrangements. The songs here lack the hooks he's capable of and while the rhythms and instrumentation are fine if you like straight ahead white kid garage bands to me it's all a little, well, boring. There are some decent songs here, but, at first listen, no great ones. Much as I like a lot of Ryan Adam's work, I'll give this one a miss.
Easy Tiger Shimmers & Shakes
Born out of the 2007 Easy Tiger recordings (then inexplicably shelved for three years), this double album is a mighty return to form that's twenty-two excellent songs deep. Ryan was always best served when he was a.) sober and b.) backed by The Cardinals. Although I relish the alt-country premise he perfected, this is a gorgeous collection of new wave/alt-pop/rock songs that are as unafraid as they are tightly focused and relaxed. This is a rewarding double effort.
