iTunes Review

Named after the Hank Williams song that was released just before he died, I’ll Never Get Out of This World Alive is another solid collection of Earle compositions. Producer T Bone Burnett keeps things natural, with extraordinary session players — drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist Dennis Crouch, pedal steel player Greg Leisz — and a handful of other special guests, fiddle player Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek and Earle’s wife Allison Moorer. The songs all have a tinge of mortality lurking, since the album was written at the time of Earle’s father’s death. “Meet Me In the Alleyway” is the album’s one moment of true grit. Otherwise, the highlights are mostly ballads: “Every Part of Me,” “Lonely Are the Free” and “I Am a Wanderer.” “This City,” featured in the HBO series Treme has been nominated for both an Emmy and GRAMMY. The Deluxe Edition of the album features an exemplary version of the Hank Williams title track and a video of the making of the album.

could be better

As a long time Earle fan and concert goer I was disappointed in this effort. The songwriting is there but where's the up beat, toe tapping, story telling that he became famous for? While this has some good tracks on it, it's too one sided in terms of melody and pace of the songs. Let's be frank, nearly all of them are downers. In your next album, bring back some of the edge you used to sing with Steve. I have 'bout all of his stuff including some bootleg concerts, but this one doesn't provide much excitement like he usually has in his music.

Amazing!

Absolutely fantastic!

will be on everyone's best of 2011 list.

I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive

Steve still has great lyrics & fantastic music delivery!

In the strictest sense, Steve Earle isn't a country artist; he's a roots rocker. Earle emerged in the mid-'80s, after Bruce Springsteen had popularized populist rock & roll and Dwight Yoakam had kick-started the neo-traditionalist movement in country music. At first, Earle appeared to be more indebted to the rock side than country, as he played a stripped-down, neo-rockabilly style that occasionally verged on outlaw country. However, his unwillingness to conform to the rules of Nashville or rock...
