Album Review

Chrissie Hynde rebounds from the directionless Packed! with Last of the Independents, a tough album that proves she can mature without losing her edge. Most of the record crackles with the lean power of Learning to Crawl, occasionally stopping for a lushly produced number recalling Get Close. Although the record goes on a little too long and there are a couple of weak songs, particularly the anthemic "I'm a Mother," Last of the Independents re-establishes Hynde as a powerful and insightful rocker.

Rock On In Retro!

Chrissie Hynde dedicated Vegan and leader of The Pretenders is the gold standard in the rock world.
Her rubber band-like vibrating contralto singing voice is one of a kind..
She takes no prisoners with "Last Of The Independents" undoubtably one of their best albums released to date.
Don't be fooled by the year it was launced thinking it will sound dated-it will still rock you from it's first song to it's last!
Her comin' at you rock n' roll attitude is wrapped up in Money Talk with it's tough girl lyrics and Night In My Veins (you can almost smell the midnight air!) but she also sings songs of love penned in passion...
I'll Stand By You was the big hit but it's the other songs that showcase the brilliant rockstar she is...

I heard both versions on the radio, and I have to say, Carrie underwoods version is alot better. I wish it was available on iTunes :((

Wonderful

I already have I'll Stand by You but I think I will get the whole album. I'll Stand by You is so beautiful without being maudlin. It brings tears to my eyes. It reminds my of my daughter and of someone else who is like a son to me. The sentiment is something I truly believe in--letting someone make mistakes but standing by them even in the face of those mistakes.

Over the years, the Pretenders became a vehicle for guitarist/vocalist Chrissie Hynde's songwriting, yet it was a full-fledged band when it was formed in the late '70s. With their initial records, the group crossed the bridge between punk/new wave and Top 40 pop more than any other band, recording a...
