iTunes Review

After the outstanding accolades of his 2007 quintuple-platinum Christmas outing Noël, Josh Groban did what any smart and successful artist would do — cut an album with Rick Rubin. Groban’s fifth studio album doesn’t play with the dire urgency of Johnny Cash’s final album, nor does it resonate with a raw and stripped-down production that’s synonymous with Rubin’s work. Instead, 2010’s Illuminations plays with a classic and timeless elegance that’s devoid of over-exaggerated vocal gymnastics. Following the opening instrumental “The Wandering Kind (Prelude),” Groban retains a slivered vestige from Noël with “Bells of New York City,” a beautifully melancholic piece that muses on Manhattan’s holiday church bells. He covers Declan O'Rourke’s “Galileo (Someone Like You)" with an otherworldly beauty similar to Jeff Buckley’s reinvention of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” Throughout Illuminations Rubin keeps the tipping-point at the edge, pushing Groban to deliver some of his best vocal performances to date.

Joyful Revelation

I am so happy that this new album has come out, you can tell Josh has poured his heart into this album. I absolutely adored the Awake album and I wasn't sure if this new one was going be on the same level.... well, I now know that it surely is. Not in the same way though. This album has an entirely different feel than any of his other albums... it feels like Josh, through this album has established a sense of identity in these songs.... something about who he is and what he really feels. It is an exciting thing to see and I applaud him and I am greatful that we all can share in his revelation. Way to go Josh!

Disappointed

I was very excited to see what one of my favorite artists would create after the amazement of "Awake", and I find myself underwhelmed. This does not sound like the Josh Groban we have all grown to know since his self-titled album. I do not know who is more responsible for this 'change in direction', Josh or Rick Reuben, but I hope to see better in the next album.

Is there a doctor in the house?!

Paging Dr. Foster.... Paging Dr. Foster.... We have an emergency in album #5!!!
