Album Review

Stars hire Rick Rubin for one thing: to achieve a purity of essence. When it comes to singers like Johnny Cash or songwriters like Neil Diamond — even rock bands like Weezer — Rubin’s approach feels natural, as he strips away the varnish that’s clouded over the years, but Josh Groban is an odd choice for the Rubin maneuver. Not a singer/songwriter in the classic sense but rather a classical singer who dabbles in pop, Groban doesn’t need to be stripped to his essence because bombast is a crucial part of the equation. Smart guy that he is, Rubin doesn’t eliminate surging melodrama from Groban’s bag of tricks but he does limit and mute the palette, making sure the strings don’t soar so high and that the singer doesn’t bellow. These subtle adjustments, which include hiring Semisonic’s Dan Wilson as a co-writing partner for Groban, wind up having a drastic effect on the flavor of Illuminations, turning it into something warm, burnished, and intimate, a spell only briefly broken by the cacophonic clatter of the Portuguese “Você Existe em Mim.” Its presence is a testament to Groban’s curiosity but Illuminations is best when he plays close to the vest, which means this is another instance where Rubin succeeds by illuminating his subject’s essence.

Dissspointed

Have been awaiting this album's release for a while. Been a long time Groban fan and have loved his prior albums. He has strayed from the warmth of the arrangements that have made his voice sound so great on past albums. This album is poorly mixed, and his voice doesn't have the warmth I'm used to hearing. It's not the same sound I've heard both live and in prior releases. I also think that moving away from a writer like Foster has caused Groban's songs to lose the power he became known for. I love the fact he writes, but I think his strength is singing and not writing.

Major Let Down

After waiting 4 years for this album I was expecting more. Sadly, Josh's attempt to branch out and try a new sound failed. On "Awake" he was able to successfully change it up by adding new sounds to the old stuff. The end result was magic. The African inspired music combined with the traditional classical sound created a multifaceted album that appealed to a variety of people. Although "Illuminations" was something that took a lot of time and effort, it resulted in only one sound.
Even though I don't like this new album I will probably continue to listen to it and hope that the next album is more reminiscent of his earlier stuff.

Exquisit...the cat's pajamas!

I have been waiting for what seemed to be an eternity for a new album from Mr. Josh Groban...I have not waited in vain. This album is wonderful! Such power, emotion, and soul. Thank you, Josh, for all your hard work and unparalleled talent <3
