Album Review

Like a refreshing dessert after the meal that was Pins and Needles, the Birthday Massacre deliver some new tracks and remixes on Imaginary Monsters. Featuring three new songs, the EP continues to expand the band’s sound into more atmospheric territories, especially on the ethereal “Left Behind,” a synth pop slow jam that unfolds amidst a sea of synthesizers and lurching drums. Where the EP really shines, though, is the remixes. Combichrist deliver a fractured remix of “Shallow Grave,” chopping the beat of the song up to give it a harder edge that seems ready-made to beat up dancefloors, while Skold gives “Pins and Needles” a stomping, industrial edge, adding a pulsing beat to the song to give it a relentless, marching quality. With only a few new tracks, Imaginary Monsters isn’t an essential release, but fans looking for a bit of gloom to dance to will find a lot to love here.

Great as usual

They can't possibly make bad music. Amazing band.

A nice bridge to the next album

There's always been something magnetic about The Birthday Massacre's music for me...a blend of pop, rock, and new wave synthpop all in one package. "Imaginary Monsters" continues with that sound, featuring 3 new tracks and 5 remixes. The new tracks are pretty good, although they do feel a little like b-sides (they're all down-tempo). The remixes are excellent as well-- with my favorite being the Assemblage 23 version. All in all, a nice treat for fans to sink their teeth into while waiting for the next album. 4/5 stars from me.

Great new songs

This band is genius. It is worth buying the whole EP just for the 3 new songs. They're all great. I especially like Burn Away. I am not normally a fan of remixes (they usually just add some sort of dance beat). However, I was pleasantly surprised at the variety here. I will actually listen to several of these, although I still remain partial to the originals. Great job - I can't wait to see the band live again!
