Album Review

Following on from the success of his sophomore set Shivers, DJ/remixer/producer Armin Van Buuren returned with 2008's Imagine. More musically adventurous than its predecessor, the Dutch club hero continues to push the boundaries of trance to their limits on the set-opening title track. "Imagine" begins in, of all places, pomp rock, then storms into the clubs on battering beats and pulsing bass, but even after it settles into its groove, the majestic melody and synthetic guitar licks keep the excitement level at fever pitch. "Going Wrong" is just as inspired, New Romantic and new wave-edged but doused in house, with vocalist Chris Jones adding to the classic status of this obvious crowd pleaser. "Hold on to Me"'s melody line initially soars like U2, but then the piece breaks towards synth-pop while Audrey Gallagher bounces overhead. It's a stirring mix of wave, pop, and trance. "In and Out of Love" beautifully blends an angular post-punk rhythm with a New Romantic atmosphere, the latter emphasized by Sharon den Adel's soaring vocals and creating a glimmering, entrancing piece. Ethereal vocals float over the coursing "Face to Face," a number as beholden to its New Romantic mood as it is to its pounding beats; eventually, though, the number slides into house and even pushes towards techno. "Unforgivable," too, has a house-y tinge and a wonderfully squelchy bassline, the percussion adding a dollop of industrial to the sound, with Jaren's warm, sultry vocals adding heat to the number's fire. "Never Say Never" adds elements of old-school house to the mix, as does "What If," which also boasts a quite intricately arranged rhythm. "Fine Without You" increases the tempo and the tension, while "Rain" storms straight into trance. The set closing "Intricacy" is a roller coaster ride, skirting around gabba territory before shooting down into house and back up into trance, the insistent four on the floor beats driving the number to its ecstatic conclusion. For all its stylistic careening, Van Buuren's careful sequencing gives Imagine a phenomenal flow, much like his live DJ sets. The album's energy, its constantly shifting tones, rhythms, and moods, its strong melodies and excellent vocals: all keep the thrill factor high throughout.

Armin is DEFINITELY NOT KIDDING!! Phenomenal album!!

Another masterpiece by Armin. Yes, this album is more vocal trance and isn't your "typical trance"... but who wants to be listening to the same trance over and over again? I love how Armin is able to incorporate new sounds into these trance songs followed by amazing vocals. I honestly believe it takes more talent and creativity to create a trance song to which a vocal artist can sing lyrics to than just composing a trance song. It is refreshing as well as challenging for Armin to jump into the vocal trance scence to experiment new songs that are accompanied by vocals. The result is PHENOMENAL and shows why he was voted the #1 DJ by fans all over the world. He is a versatile DJ with many musical talents. And if you don't like the new, refreshing direction of trance and it's incorporation of new sounds and vocals, then just stick to your "old trance tunes" and don't waste your time writing bad reviews simply because the music is not the same old trance of back in the day. I am tired of people writing bad reviews on Armin's and Tiesto's albums with their reasoning being "this is not your typical trance music". Isn't that supposed to be a good thing?? Isn't that the idea... to break out and be original in the realm of trance music?? The definition of trance is defined as an uplifting, energetic electronic-combination of ambient music, techno, and house music which can be accompanied by vocals. If you listen to just the music and take out the vocals (also known as the dub version), what do you hear?? Trance... really good trance composed by Armin himself. I heard these songs without the vocals (dub versions) and to me it qualifies as trance... really uplifting and full of energy dance trance. In the end, everyone is entitled to their opinion. But PLEASE do not judge an album, especially a trance album, that does not fall into the same old style you're used to. Judge it on its creativity and originality. If these new trance albums were the same old style we are used to, then eventually we would all get sick of hearing the same old beats and melodies. Thank God for Armin breaking out and jumping into new waters and leading trance to a new level!!

Amazing Trance album from the best Dj in the world

Armin is really going to make a strong case to repeat as #1 Dj again this year because of this album. He's finally out of the shadow of the great Paul van Dyk and Tiesto. This is so good i'm going to purchase the actual CD when it comes out in the US on May 6th.

Amazing

Absolutely freaking FABULOUS!!!
