Album Review
Charlie Cooper and Josh Eustis' second and third Telefon Tel Aviv albums are as different from one another as their first and second albums. Fahrenheit Fair Enough's fractured, melodic instrumentals morphed into crisp song form on Map of What Is Effortless, with vocalists and string arrangements helping to shape alternately jagged and sweeping productions into tense glitch/R&B torch songs. Following Map, Immolate Yourself — released on Ellen Allien's Bpitch Control label — increases the pensive energy and tension, with both conveyed through snapping beats, taut sequencer patterns, sheet upon sheet of textural elements, and vocals that come across as desperate and/or pained, even when barely audible beneath all the consuming sounds. These are chilling sounds from a dark place that, nonetheless, shelter the listener. Between the European and stateside physical releases of the album, Cooper passed away. Knowledge of that could only intensify the album's most passive spins.
Customer Reviews
R.I.P.
Charlie will be greatly missed.
Jeez People C'mon.
Check it. This album is absolutely beautiful, hands down. I don't find it to be "dancy", i don't find it to be "80's" sounding or whatever someone else try's to label it, i just find it to be BEAUTIFUL. If you want the old TTA, then go put on the older lp's, sorry. Tele just does what they want, which is why i respected them from the very beginning . Listen to the drums, i mean their NASTIER than ever, very thick and heavy sounding, the synths are beefy and fat. Tele's sonic sound is still their, infact the sound is way updated, ran through tape machines and gawd knows what else. True "artist" like Telefon change, period. And if you can't understand that, then well...i guess you never understood TTA in the first place did you? Charles Wesley Cooper, III (April 12, 1977 - January 22, 2009)
New sound, more danceable, different path...
I'm a huge fan of TTA. Own and enjoy every album. This album is not near as groundbreaking as their previous works. Every album up until this point has really forced the listener to stretch their creative minds in order to comprehend exactly what was happening. This, to me, was a beautiful and provocative thing, because laced with the profoundness of their sound, was a foundation of beauty, dramatic and full. This album is far more palatable. With 80's dance beats formulated and spit out through a TTA equation, the listener is able to take some of their favorite sounds from 2 decades ago and hear them reinvented in a neo-dance-exeprimental way. We saw the beginnings of this sound in their work with Belong. If you dig this album, hop on over to Belong's page. More ambient, but same gist. All in all, this album is really good. Different path from before, but gets you moving and will bring in a whole other audience that hadn't previously heard of TTA. This album fits nicely in with the other artists of BPitch control...another indicator that you might like this album: You find enjoyment in Ellen Allien, Apparat and the rest of the BPitch Control roster. 5 stars for being TTA, 5 stars for just being fresh and getting my head to rock. P.S. - Upon giving this album a more extended listen I will say that it can positively, unequivocally be defined as damn infectious. You will be humming these songs (especially The Birds) to yourself in the grocery store as your ears recover from it blasting at max volume on the drive up. Listen to it for a day and I'm sure you'll agree. Worth the digitally withdrawn cash...plus, they brought back the cow bell in M. I mean come on, you know you don't have enough cow bell in your life!
