Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place

On their fifth album, Anberlin strike a perfect balance between effervescent pop and stormy, surging emo. That's largely due to the heart-on-sleeve approach of frontman Stephen Christian, whose lilting, melodic vocals elevate the hard-charging rush of "Impossible," while exuding desperation on the ornate, slow-building "Take Me (As You Found Me)." The album’s darker moments course with a desperate sense of anguish, as on the noisy guitar-thrasher “Depraved” or the strident pop-punk highlight “To the Wolves,” which tells a condemning story of betrayal.
