iTunes Review
What would Charles Mingus make of the RZA? Unfortunately, the man’s not around to bend our ears on the subject. But it’s not hard to imagine that he’d dig what the Wu-Tang master does with his “II BS” on Impulsive!, a new set of remixes in the mold of the recent Verve Records series. The tune now has a slightly slower, dragged-out feel that adds even more threat to Mingus’ general toughness. Dizzy Gillespie’s “Swing Low, Sweet Cadillac” becomes a Six Degrees-style dance-floor burner in Gerardo Frisina’s hands, while Pharoah Sanders’ “Astral Traveling” receives an update (from Boozoo Bajou) that the original track’s laidback groove only hinted at. One or two tunes don’t translate as successfully, but they hardly stand in the way of the album’s overall quality. Also check out the companion Impulsive! Unmixed selection of originals.

impulsive! impressive...ala verve remixed with an edge
this is an amazing album, 1st the impulse! label was legendary for cutting edge music with a large splash of 60's politics poured on top... Impulse has the coolest colors, the best logo, and of course was where John Coltrane created his very best and most influential recordings....in a way Impulse! is the house that 'Trane built... a house built on pride and assertion of oneself. now take RZA from Woo Tang, Chief Xcel, Mark Clive-Lowe, and others and let them loose..... CRANK up the Dizzy track LOUD....LOUDER...there ya go. . . this is a fun fun fun album
Wow - UNIQUE
Listening to the previews really makes me want to part with the $10 bucks to own it - very good remixes and very interesting.
Wow!
A mix of some great tracks. I'm a heavy jazz fan and have always loved the Impulse label, but haven't been moved by the acid jazz sound til now. A friend recommended that I pick it up and frankly I'm blown away. Keeping an infectious groove throughout, this album is slammin! I strongly recommend checking it out!
