Album Review

The curious blend of pianist Eliane Elias with conductor and arranger Bob Brookmeyer leading the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra makes for a surprising mix. Brookmeyer, long established as one of the top jazz writers and a phenomenal valve trombonist to boot, was not familiar with the recordings of the Brazilian keyboardist, but he was clearly up to the challenge of scoring her music. Brookmeyer gives "Just Kiddin'" a big and bold post-bop treatment, with an underlying funky rhythm and a bit of electronics thrown in for fun. Elias and Brookmeyer share the solo spotlight in the breezy setting of her ballad "So in Love." Far more low-key is "Moments," with sparse piano lines backed by Brookmeyer's rich scoring for the brass and a fine solo by flugelhornist Henrik Bolberg Pedersen. The exotic, high-energy setting of "The Time Is Now" is a more modern bossa nova, showcasing Elias and Brookmeyer, along with bassist Thomas Ovesen and drummer Jonas Johansen. "One Side of You" is a haunting ballad made more so by Brookmeyer's brilliant arrangement. This session may throw a bit of a curve to longtime fans of either Eliane Elias or Bob Brookmeyer, but this successful CD is very much an ear opener.

Impulsive! Brookmeyer & Elias

His tonality scores with Elias is pure Brookmeyer and impressive to the ears. I can never get enough Brookmeyer. Most everything he writes or arranges is terrific. Even earlier in the 60's with Clark Terry and the Power of Positive Swinging he posses that tonal flow of notes that makes for great listening and swinging, whether he is playing his valve trombone, the piano, or arranging for large ensembles. This album is great!

Elias - Brookmeyer - Danish Jazz Radio Orchestra - An Incredible Explosion!

If you are a serious big band aficionado and you know your stuff this album will absolutely blow you away. The arrangements are stellar - think Kenton at his biggest sound ever. Brookmeyer arranges the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra to a resounding crescendo. These guys can play horn. These guys can play drums. And Elain Elias can play piano. She not only has superb vocal chops but can sit in with any of the best big band musicians whenever she wants. And they're lucky to have her. This album bears repeat listen after listen after listen. Clear your house, chase the kids away and pop the volume up. You're in for a delightful treat! --J Eliot Brodrick

Bob Brookmeyer was long considered one of the top valve trombonists in jazz and a very advanced arranger whose writing was influenced by modern classical music. He started out as a pianist in dance bands but played valve trombone with Stan Getz (1953). He gained fame as a member of the Gerry Mulligan quartet (1954-1957), was part of the unusual Jimmy Giuffre Three of 1957-1958 (which consisted of Giuffre's reeds, Brookmeyer's valve trombone, and Jim Hall's guitar), and then re-joined Mulligan as...
