iTunes Review

In late 1991, Nirvana changed the course of rock when its "Smells Like Teen Spirit" pungently perfumed the airwaves. This joyously snarling single was only one of the many delights found on Nevermind, the trio's second album and massive breakthrough. At once abrasive and melodic, spookily introspective and explosively aggressive, Nevermind launched singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain as an unlikely pop superstar. His volatile genius infuses tracks like "Lithium" and "Territorial Pissings" with a take-no-prisoners desperation. Cobain lashes out at both society and himself with fearless glee. "In Bloom" and "Stay Away" are particularly thrilling bursts of mockery and rage. "Come As You Are" and "On A Plain" demonstrate the band's moody mid-tempo touch. Bassist Chris Novoselic and drummer David Grohl ride the tunes' hairpin curves with a keen feel for drama and dynamics. Butch Vig's high-resolution production brings each note into bold relief. Nevermind is more than a grunge-rock milestone - it remains a wildly intoxicating sonic experience.

If you haven't heard this, and/or haven't purchased this... What planet are you from, and what is life like there??? ... Seriously...

It never ceases to astound me.

Grunge was a strange genre (no, I'm not insulting grunge. Actually, most grunge fans will take that as a complement). The melodies were simple, the guitars rough, and vocals (usually) strained. Nirvana's Nevermind leans toward the pop side of grunge, and while In Utero (barely) passes it, Nevermind was a near-perfect album with the soul to imprint itself onto the hearts of everyone wo ever grow up in this period. Songs like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, and Come As You Are speak for themselves. But these aren't the best on this album (and it does get pretty annoying that the unwritten law that Teen Spirit must continually be overplayed still hasnt been repealed). Lounge Act and Stay Away are both forgotten works, and are forgotten classics. Yes, you can stick with the familiar. But Nirvana has more to offer than just its hits.

REGARDING THE COVER

People don't seem to understand the album cover, it's representing nirvanas rebellious nature to the mainstream, people who give this 1 star should listen to the songs and understand them before rating, I remember listining to this in the car as a kid and enjoying it, Kurt Cobain killed himself because his music was becoming too mainstream and he would rather kill himself than become another mainstream band, he LIVED for the underground music scene, he also wanted people to actually listen to his music and not listen to it because it was played over the radio, this is great music from a great band that influenced many bands you probably listen to today, I think nirvana was one of the greatest grunge bands of the 90's, not because of their mainstream success, but because they had just plain the best music for the genre

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s

Prior to Nirvana, alternative music was consigned to specialty sections of record stores, and major labels considered it to be, at the very most, a tax write-off. After the band's second album, 1991's Nevermind, nothing was ever quite the same, for better and for worse. Nirvana popularized punk, post-punk,...
