iTunes Review

The artists’ credit on In Christ Alone goes to Bethany Dillon & Matt Hammitt, but the name above the title ought to read “John Mark Painter.” In the role of arranger/producer, Painter (formerly with the duo Fleming and John) takes some real creative risks in framing this collection of modern hymns. The songs here — written by such Christian music notables as Martin Smith, Matt Maher and Stuart Townsend — boast richly reverent lyrics matched with gracefully-sculpted melodies evocative of 19th-century hymnody. Painter orchestrates them with elaborate string and horn parts that are often compelling, sometimes kitschy and always inventive. Of the two featured singers, Sanctus Real vocalist Hammitt has the best moments, delivering such tracks as “Adoration,” “In the Cross Alone I Glory” and “The Wonder of the Cross” with a blend of dignity and fervor. Folk-pop artist Dillon turns in some fine performances as well, shining especially on “On the Third Day.” While the emphasis here is on worship, “God of Justice” offers a ringing call to social activism. A stirring collection of sacred songs done with artistic flair.

A needed expression for many Christians

A lot of the reviews I've read (all over the internet, not just here) seem to not appreciate what this album is trying to do. This album does not sound like Bethany Dillon or Matt Hammitt in their own right, but, as everyone has mentioned, their voices are very impressive together. More importantly, this album hits a niche that most worship albums fail to do. This album is much more for the Sufjan Stevens crowd than the Crowder, Switchfoot, Getty, Tomlin, and even Sanctus Real/Dillon crowd. I do not think people understand how much this album could bridge the gap between worship songs in general and the crowd that hates the over emotional, polished worship stuff out there now (the anti-K-love crowd). Get this album, not because it can compete with Tomlin or Crowder, but because it compliments them and gives many Christians who feel lost in the world of worship music a medium to enjoy it. I think this is one of the most worthwhile worship projects in a very long time because it breaks the mold and opens up these popular songs to a much wider audience.

Also, the arrangements are stunning I think. It is about time for the U2 influence in worship music to fade, and I think these arrangements may be what will be our future (maybe). Christian artists need to look beyond the light shows, high energy four-on- the-floor, and look to something a little more honest.

Just some thoughts from a worship leader (who loves his U2 electric guitar) for over a decade; take them or leave them.

I bought this record only because of Bethany Dillon. I've been listening to it for a while, and it has kept me up to date with contemporary worship hymns.

exactly what i was looking for

This is awesome, and refreshing for two reasons. First, all of these songs, while written within the past five years, are as rich lyrically as hymns that were written over a hundred years ago. Too many Christian songs are fluffy these days. Secondly, the musical styling is fresh, and not cheesy. What more could you ask for?
