Album Review

Whenever there's a new release from the Ipecac label, you know that you can be in for just about anything. But that's why you love 'em so much. Case in point, one of the label's first releases of 2006, In Cod We Trust by Ghostigital, a name some might remember as the title of former Sugarcubes member Einar Örn's solo debut. Here, he takes care of the vocals (in an almost stream-of-consciousness vein) and partners once again with a chap named Curver, making Ghostigital an album title that turned into a band. Curver is a remixer (having worked with Sigur Rós) and a multi-instrumentalist — handling electronics, tape delays, and "gadgets." The gentlemen from one of the world's coldest countries create one unpredictable sonic stew, as rap, electronic, and experimental bits collide with one another, as evidenced by such ditties as "Not Clean," "Northern Lights," and "Green Lounge." Örn and Curver enlist the aid of several special guests throughout, including Ipecac labelmates Mugison and Dälek, among several others (as well as Örn's son, Kaktus, who blows a mean trumpet). In Cod We Trust is certainly not easy listening, but not all music is meant to be easily digestible.

Discordant Sonic Playground

Although it took me awhile to get into this album, as I usually listen to more poppy music, once you get into this CD it's very cool. There are a lot of layers and interesting sonic components that conflict, collide and ultimately combine to form a truly new sound, unlike anything most people are used to hearing. (Seriously, that's not a cliche). Noises orbit around each other, run into each other, and bounce off each other while Einar Orn is in top form, ranting above the cacophony just as maniacally and brilliant as he was on the Sugarcubes album. If you didn't like him then, you probably won't like him now, and personally I'm glad he's not making consessions for anyone nor trying to win over a mass audience. He is definitely continuing to follow his own path and has found a group of talented people to help him with this vision. Curver's beats are at once sinisterly hypnotic yet echo many different genres of music from jazz to punk. I recommend catching them live as their shows are loud and intensely original.

What's that you say?

This album is insane!!! Very very crunk, if you listen to it to much it might make you go crazy and I mean that in the best possible way it can be meant. Buy it, listen to it, live it and love it!!

Biography

Formed: Reykjavik, Iceland

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s

While Björk began her quest for avant pop stardom soon after the Sugarcubes split up, her trumpet-playing, shouting, and always-eccentric Cube mate Einar Örn Benediktsson (often just Einar Örn) took a decade off before returning in 2004 with his solo debut, Ghostigital, on the Honest Jons label. Recorded with Icelandic multi-instrumentalist Curver, the duo would later adopt the album's title as the name for any future projects. In 2005, Ghostigital the project would sign to fellow maverick Mike Patton's...
