iTunes Review

There’s a bittersweet undercurrent to the Newsboys’ In the Hands of God, despite the largely sunny feel to its tracks. Peter Furler’s announced intention to step down as lead singer makes this album feel like a summation of the veteran Christian band’s previous works. With production guidance from Superchick’s Max Hsu, the Boys veer between the propulsive dance grooves of their recent releases and the cheeky retro-pop of their ‘90s hits. Long-time fans will connect with the joyful camaraderie of “The Way We Roll,” the affirmative spirit of “This Is Your Life” and the unrestrained reverence of “Glorious.” The Beatles-like string embellishment on the buoyant “Upside” adds some freshness to the track, and even better are “My Friend Jesus” (a goofy yet God-centered ditty co-written with old pal Steve Taylor) and “RSL 1984” (a nostalgic tune filled with images of the band’s Australian homeland). The album’s title track is a strong statement of the Newsboys’ continuing ministry in a period of transition. In the Hands of God allows Furler to exit the spotlight with his faith and freewheeling humor intact.

I read some of the past reviews: 'joeskis'; 'Kozy 21' and 'Tim 67' just to mention some of the "less-stars-reviews"! LISTEN : if you want great worship & awesome music THIS is the way to go! For those guys mentioned up there: OPEN UP YOUR HEART AND LISTEN AGAIN - you missed something = THE LOVE OF GOD & LOVE UNTO GOD IN THESE SONGS! SO: LISTEN w/ YOUR HEART! This is true worship w/ great beats to it : right from the heart and right to YOUR heart!!!

People who are 5-staring this album are drinking the Newsboys kool-aid I think.

I've been a Newsboys fan since their "Boyz will be Boyz" album and I can saw without a doubt this one ranks maybe in the middle of what they've put out since then.

The first two songs are great. The 2nd one has a nice rocky sound. "This is your Life" musically is terrific but lyrically it's weak. Their other songs are sadly forgettable.

I suppose the album will grow on me but it's not their best. And yeah I'm a bit disappointed because this marks the end of my devotion to the Newsboys. With Peter Furler leaving I think I'll exit the Newsboys stage as well.

If you're a Newsboys fan then yeah get this one. If you're not... don't spend your money on it.

Years Active: '90s, '00s

One of the more media-exposed Christian rock bands of the '90s, Newsboys formed in the late '80s around a core of John James, Peter Furler, and Philip Urry. Though early in their career the band was panned for a perceived over-reliance on religious clichés in their lyrics, Newsboys later grasped secular...
