iTunes Review
Judy Collins' sixth album completes her transformation from traditional folksinger to master interpreter of any genre she pleases. Her choices define the term eclectic. An abstract Bob Dylan song such as "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," Lennon and McCartney's timeless title track, Leonard Cohen's majestic "Suzanne" and his deeply nuanced and dramatic "Dress Rehearsal Rag" and European theatre pieces like Bertold Brecht and Kurt Weill ("Pirate Jenny") and Jacques Brel ("La Colombe") rest comfortably alongside one another, tied together by arranger Joshua Rifkin's tasteful, artsy arrangements and Collins' unforced yet virtuoso vocal performances. Her voice is a clear marvel and she manages to convey grace, elegance, and emotionalism with perfect balance. Her rendition of Randy Newman's "I Think It's Going to Rain Today" is first-rate and definitive, while Donovan's "Sunny Goodge Street" is given a sweet read and Richard Farina's "Hard Lovin' Loser" is delivered with unexpected toughness. With In My Life, Collins had hit her stride without giving into the lite-FM tendencies of her later work.

Highlights...
This was one of my faves from Dad's vinyl collection, though it took me a while to appreciate it. I was always a fan of Judy's very early, more hardcore folkie material (see "Maid of Constant Sorrow" for a fine example of this era in her career), and so the "artier" and more studio-driven production values of this album initially turned me off. But I returned to this album after hearing a local DJ play her cover of "Sunny Goodge Street" and grew to marvel at the power of her interpretation. That song plus two others, in my opinion, make this album a classic: her "Suzanne" is the quintessential version for me, and "I Think It's Going To Rain Today" is equally resonant in its solemnity. For the record, Donovan's original of "Sunny Goodge Street" is completely different from her version and beautiful in its own way. I must differ from the above reviewer and say that I think the majority of his catalogue is nothing to "gulp" about, and that while Judy created a miraculous reinterpretation of the song, she had a gem to work with. Obviously, your mileage may vary.
IN MY LIFE
....spent many a night listenin' to this one......"Dress Rehersal Rag", it was a long way down.....for sure.....and then the dreamy "Sunny Goodge Street"....then, Liverpool Lullaby, aye, that's a sad one....every song on this album was great and that's a hard one to find, that is , in those days one bought the whole album for just a couple of songs and the rest was filler material and it was rare that every song on one album would shine....and this one does. Thank you.
In MY Life
Probably the best album of Judy Collins; truly unique
