Album Review
Irish folk music isn't for everyone, but if you're the slightest bit interested in the genre, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem are required listening. While both the Clancys and Makem have produced some fine solo albums, their best work remains their collaborative recordings. Particularly on live records like this one, their love for the music and culture of Ireland comes across loud and clear, delighting the audience and the listener. Thanks to an above-average collection of tunes and the lively performance of the musicians, In Person at Carnegie Hall is a great starting point for the uninitiated. It also serves as a good tolerance test for listeners who are uncertain whether Irish music is really for them; if you don't like what you hear on this album, chances are you won't care for anything else the genre has to offer. Of course, it's hard to imagine anyone not being drawn in by the opening one-two punch of "Johnson's Motorcar" and "The Juice of the Barley." And it just gets better from there. Not only are all the songs fun to listen to, but each one represents a particular type of Irish tune. There's the drinking song ("A Jug of Punch"), the protest song ("Patriot Game"), and the rollicking singalong ("Reilly's Daughter"). But the standout here is the 12-and-a-half-minute track "The Children's Medley," in which the musicians string together more than a dozen different songs and poems from their childhood. The result is beautiful pastiche of old-old-school Irish folk music that makes you appreciate the history and beauty of the form.

Nothing better...Nothing sadder...the passing of Tommy Makem
Yesterday's passing of Tommy Makem (8/1/07) made minor news in mainstream media, but a generous NPR moment slipped gently the wee bit of news that Tommy had succombed to cancer. Never knew him, of course, just the sound he championed in the company of the The Clancy Brothers. Yet, I already miss him. Will there ever be anyone like him and the Clancy Brothers again? A child of an Irish-American mum, wildly influenced by the 60's rock scene, I came home, as it were, to the quiet of classical Irish folk music, a vocal backdrop that covered so many impressionable years. Unlikely to sit one out, Irish mom was energized and embraced the not-so quiet sensibilities of radical (Catholic) Northern Ireland and the musical troubadors of that time, and brought me along. You might be too. Revisit with pleasure the absolute BEST of Tommy Makem and the Clancy Bros. in the 1964 "In Person at Carnegie Hall" album. Take some time to soak in the Irish tones of their 1964 album, "In Person at Carnegie Hall." Pay special head to "Oro e Do Bheatha Bhaila," or the "Children's Melody." Hug the ones you love while you're at it.
Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem In Person at Carnegie Hall
A magical evening of fun and comradeship captured at the boys peak! Enjoy and participate in the lively tunes and experience the heart and soul of the ballads. I listened to these same songs over and over growing up and now they are shared with my own children.
warm Irish music
A wonderful live album. You feel their warmth and love of performance. If you've got one choice of Clancy Brothers albums, pick this one. The best track is the "album only" Children's Medley, a fun remembrance of Irish children's songs.
