iTunes Review

On its sophomore album, We Were Promised Jetpacks unleashes a barrage of lean, lethal post-punk tunes with the precision of an elite strike force. The Glasgow quartet relies on simple chords and repetitive rhythms to construct its songs, then expands them in tension-building arrangements that rise from a whisper to a roar and back again. Singer/guitarist Adam Thompson guides his combo with an air of brooding angst, spurred by drummer Darren Lackie’s rapid-fire drum bursts and explosive fills. Rarely since the days of New Order has a band crystallized rage and despair as well as WWPJ does on “Pear Tree,” “Sore Thumb,” “Boy in the Backseat” and similar tracks. “Medicine” and “Picture of Health” show the band’s ability to compress its volcanic sound into tight pop-song structures. In “Circles and Squares,” Thompson and company seem to be aiming for arena rock–like grandeur amid the thrashing cacophony. Though dark to its core, In the Pit of the Stomach achieves a kind of heroism through its emotional intensity and tight, visceral focus.

fav indie album

i didnt even know i could like indie this much! i usually listen to punk, metal and rap but this is amazing. medicine is my favorite indie song.

A little disappointing

Was really looking forward to this album as I thought These Four Walls was fantastic. Unfortunately, after listening to it twice thru it just doesn't hold up to the debut album. A little harder and darker, I'm sure it will grow on me a bit over time but it lacks the catchy hooks and soaring vocals of These Four Walls. Medicine is a good song, but it seems out of place on this album. Still going to see them in 3 weeks, hoping for a good show!

New album

These guys made an impressive first cd and this cd shows there new big sound and it's amazing. Favorite new band in the past two years ! Act on impulse is a stand out song .

Half bracing post-punk and half tuneful indie pop, Glasgow's We Were Promised Jetpacks feature vocalist/guitarist Adam Thompson, guitarist Michael Palmer, bassist Sean Smith, and drummer Darren Lackie. The group formed while the four were still attending an Edinburgh high school, where they won a battle of the bands contest with their very first gig. After graduation, We Were Promised Jetpacks relocated to Glasgow, and their sound matured as well, moving from simple song structures and clean guitars...
