Hopeful angst
"I don't know what to do, is the kingdom even breaking through? God, I hope it still is true. From everything I see, the biggest problem still seems to be me. And for all the ways the world is s$%t, there's still so much beauty in all of it." The Cobalt Season is one of the most wonderful examples of bands rejecting the sacred/secular split so often perpetuated by the music industry today. "In Search of a Unified Theory" specifically is far too honest and raw for the CCM "Jesus, Jesus Praise Jesus, God bless me in my private, emotional faith" crowd, and goes beyond the cynicism of "secular" indie folk (who often make a career out of whining without providing anything constructive) to express a hopefulness in the midst of struggle and pain and confusion. Some of their songs reduce me to tears as the lyrics walk that painful edge of honesty and desperate hope...the album is so intimate it almost feels like I'm standing over Ryan Sharp's shoulder as he writes in his journal; finding him sometimes bitterly weeping and sometimes rejoicing. The vulnerability and sharp critiques of our cultural narcissism, in a similar fashion, are sometimes expressed in poetic nuance and sometimes with blunt force and shocking vocabulary. "Perhaps we're the one's we've been waiting for," Sharp suggests in "Help me out Here." I've been waiting for a band like this for a long time, though in some ways I didn't know it.
Provoking Album...
"In Search of an Unified Theory" just keeps playing over and over again on my iPod, in my car, and on my iTunes. The album has capture the tension, vulnerablilty, and the creative yearning for authenticity that I have been looking for on the way. This album has been one that has reshaped by outlook on the changing world around me. Ryan and Holly have captured what so many of us have been trying to say for so long - and they did it with the prophetic geniusness of their lyrical writing the sweet gentleness of their vocals and melodies. This album is simply provoking - expect it to take you where you've not gone before.
Beautiful Music
I absolutley love this album! This album has a very full sound you can notice right away and is filled with piano and warm bass. "Careful Not to Draw Your Maps In Pen and Ink" (Track 2) really resonates with me. The music on this album is truly wonderful. Great for bus rides, thinking and walking. I tested it and approve.
