Album Review
Philip Sheppard, a cellist and professor at the Royal Academy of Music, seems to have had a great opportunity as a composer in working on the documentary In the Shadow of the Moon, which traces the NASA space program with extensive restored footage. Unlike a dramatic feature, such a film provides lengthy, slow-moving shots of remarkable visuals of the earth and the moon, and Sheppard has provided an appropriate soundtrack. The traditional way of handling such film stock would be with classical-sounding orchestral pieces; in more recent times, contemporary composers, notably Philip Glass have accompanied documentaries like Koyaanisqatsi with rapid, repetitive rhythmic figures to convey energy. Sheppard seems to be familiar with both approaches, and he uses them both, sometimes in the same cue, such as "X15 Jet," which has an attractive melody and a Glass-like rhythm pattern. Much the same is true of "Re-Entry." The story of the moon landings is not only one of triumph and great pictures of space, but also includes some tense and even tragic moments, which Sheppard conveys in such cues as "Elegy" and "Crawler," using familiar orchestral methods to convey sadness and suspense. But for the most part this is music to accompany a heroic saga played out against breathtaking scenery.
Customer Reviews
Beautiful & Lyrical
I have to agree with the earlier reviewer that called this "poetic" -- it's really excellent music. I don't know anything about the film, but I bet it's quite moving after hearing the score. Now I want to hear more from Philip Sheppard! I haven't been this curious about a new composer since Kerry Muzzey and Marcelo Zarvos hit the scene. Great work, and a bargain at 9.99.
As gripping as the event
Philip Sheppard has done a magnificent job creating an uplifting score for this documentary. I can't wait to see the movie in the theater next week. I have been listening to the score daily for the last week and it really evokes images of that magical event. My father was a program director at the Kennedy Space Center from 1966- 1979. I grew up with all of this as daily life and needless to say, only later did I realize what a gifted childhood I had. Living in Cocoa Beach during Gemini and Apollo was a great adventure, and as I get older and see the astronauts in their twilight years, I realize the great human significance of the event. If you have never seen a launch of a Saturn 5 in person, this music will be the next best thing.
Inspirational
I bought this album after listening to some samples on the documentary's web site. Unfortunately I won't be able to see it until it's released to DVD. But I'm very happy that I went and bought the soundtrack. My favorites are (in no particular order): Re-Entry, The Good Earth, Downlink, Staging. In these hard, frustrating times we live in we have precious little inspirational entertainment. I recommend this soundtrack because it fills that gap nicely.
