Album Review
After flirting with synthesizers and smoother textures on 2007's I'm Only a Man, Emery returned to a harder sound with While Broken Hearts Prevail, a seven-song EP that attempted to placate anyone who balked at the previous album's content. Released one year later, ...In Shallow Seas We Sail continues the progress that Broken Hearts made, allowing some melodic moments to flourish but largely emphasizing the band's hardcore foundation. The result is a fairly competent screamo album, with the band making all the usual stops between hushed melancholia and guttural, scream-filled catharsis. As demonstrated by leadoff track "Cutthroat Courage," Emery's dual frontmen have learned to play off each other's strengths, and their use of overlapping, echoing melodies makes for some of the most melodically poignant moments here. While the band has yet to progress as rapidly on the lyrical front, returning fans will likely champion this as Emery's finest work.
Customer Reviews
Phenominal Album.
I don't know where all of the reviews are for this album. iTunes probably reloaded it, thus deleting the reviews and ratings. Anyway, Emery's new album is nothing short of fantastic. They have really outdone themselves this time, bringing back the hardcore elements of "The Weak's End" and "The Question" but holding onto the lyrical strength and sheer beauty of "I'm only a Man". On a side note, you should definitely read through the lyrics during your first listen, because they are stunning and really combine with the musical aspect to make this album something of a masterpiece. In short, do yourself a favor and buy this album, but get the physical CD instead of the digital download. I promise you won't regret it, and will end up listening to it over and over again.
Way to go Emery!
It's a great album. I pre-ordered it before it came out. Broke down, like, a week ago and finally bought the physical copy so I could have a backup as well as play it in my aux-less stereo.
I'm different from most Emery fans.
My first taste of them was from the "I'm Only A Man" special edition...since that was the first Emery cd I'd ever bought.
I loved and still love the iconic sound of that album. The fact that Matt Carter had to learn to make up for the lack of a rhythm guitarist and in such a unique way really speaks for his skill as a musician.
I think it's absolutely incredible what the guitar does on this album. I mean, listen to it. Every track is one..count it...one guitar.
Toby and Devin are amazing vocalists whose individual songs have their own attitudes and perspectives on the stories they tell...but they also synch together very well.
Dave is just, flat out, an incredible drummer. Josh...well, he screams...a lot and does a great job putting little synth lines into the songs.
They're a fantastic real band in an era of one-hit wonders and teeny-bopper pop icons that are destined to fade away in a couple years.
Emery creates real music that lasts.
All in all, I give the album a fair rating of 5 stars.
It takes a successful formula of the bands' past work, and improves upon it while breaking some new ground.
The hardcore and screaming from the first album shows heavily. The "new ground" is mainly the track "Churches and Serial Killers" with the string arrangement and plucked guitar strings in the verses as opposed to the "normal" strumming.
The poignant lyrics in the album closing "Dear Death" tell a story much like the previous album "I'm Only A Man".
Hooky choruses and melodic guitar work shine through like their work from The Question.
It's a great culmination of their skill and experience to date and very much a living, breathing album that never seems to sit just one way in your mind.
Best 9 bucks I ever spent.
I just love it.
Like honestly ive just recently became a fan of emery, but i just love them dude. Theyre awesome. They sound amazing. Theyre lyrics are all meaningful and stuff. And they love Jesus.
