Album Review

Although it went platinum, nothing stands as better evidence of how cyclical the pop experience is than the response to In Square Circle. Wonder actually wrote some superb songs, and several, like "Overjoyed" and "I Love You Too Much," were superior to the hit single "Part-Time Lover." But that one zoomed to the top spot and became the album's definitive tune in the minds of many.

Great Songs and Early Digital Recording

On this album Stevie is writing just as great as he did ten years before and in some cases better. Some people are turned off by Stevie's use of synthesizers and sequencers in the 1980s, but Stevie was being Stevie just as much as he was in 1972 with acoustic instruments and moogs. Stevie always has the best technology before it even comes out. And listen to how complex and layered his use of the synthesizers is on this album. For those of you who have a problem with 1980s synthesizers and drum machines, you're missing out on a great Stevie Wonder album. This album really grooves. Stevie lays down some of his best background harmonies on this album on tracks such as "I Love You Too Much" and "Stranger on the Shore of Love." Stevie's a true musician which means he is always getting better. For those of you who only listen to "Talking Book" and "Innervisions", you're missing great music. In Square Circle is where it's at.

Take it for what it's worth...

I personally enjoy this release immensly. I was 4 when this Lp was released and I remember my parents killing the "Part-Time Lover" 45 in repeat plays(LP single, for those too young to know what a 45 is). The Lp became a staple in our summer time music...even today. It's a great Lp to be active and out in the streets. It's a feel good type lp. And what's meant by take it for what it's worth means that this was released in 1985, 22 years ago. Synthesizers and drum machines were the rage - as Stevie's music always had a techy backdrop - as he used the latest technology of the '70s for his now deemed "classics" period. He's always been on the forefront of anything new and technical - so you shouldn't fault him for this release sounding like the time. All of his Lp's sound like the time they were recorded. We all hold a nostalgia to each recording and we dismiss the fact that it sounds like it was recorded in 1972 or 1985. With digital recording becoming more accessible and easier to perform, he took advantage and used every item that would have crisp clarity in the new forum - and I applaud him for his efforts. So while it sound like it was recorded in 1985, embrace it for the technological advancements he used for the recording and think back to the nostalgia you have when you hear Overjoyed or Go Home or even Part-Time Lover....remember where you were or what you were doing when you first heard those songs. Remember how it felt to go to the record store and buy the vinyl or cassette - or if you had the money the actual CD, and let the smile creep across your face as you sit back and remember the way it used to be...

wow

this album is exceptional and displays his talents just as most of his others do

Stevie Wonder is a much-beloved American icon and an indisputable genius not only of R&B but popular music in general. Blind virtually since birth, Wonder's heightened awareness of sound helped him create vibrant, colorful music teeming with life and ambition.
