iTunes Review

The hell raising begins on the second track when “My Plague” kicks down the door with vintage Kirk Hammett-styled guitar riffs, a fierce rhythm section approximating the sprayed firing of multi-barrel cannons, and singer Morgan Lander recalling Linda Blair’s 1973 satanic possession with her feral blood-curdling shrieks. With the appropriately titled In the Black, the Ontario-based quartet make the leap from the alt-metal of 2007’s Funeral for Yesterday to relentless black metal that sounds so dark and evil, you’d swear these gals spent the last summer with church-burning Viking-rockers in Norway. Lander even stated in the album’s press release that she wanted In the Black to be the complete antithesis of Kittie’s last album. “Cut Throat” retains the band’s knack for catchy songwriting and with Lander segueing into her familiar singing voice on the song’s choruses, Kittie dares to make black metal more accessible. The sinister sounding “Sorrow I Know” is another standout that emerges with a menacing tone in the verse and powerful vocals that vine like ivy creeping around an artillery of instrumental juggernauts.

Very Nice!

They are going back to their harder roots. Even though I loved "Funeral For yesturday" it was lacking the same old agression I was used to. This is not as heavie as their first 3 albums but they are moving back. It does have a more matalcore and less Nu-metal sound to it but it is still great. ANYTHING Kittie puts out is good and this is not disappointing. Its raw, hardcore, angry, and beautiful. It is deffinetly worth buying if you love Kittie or are a first time listener.

Kingdome Come 10/10 - GREAT OPENING! Its instrumental and soft, but its dark and gets you ready, already a good start...Plus its interesting how it is one of the few openings to a CD I listen to more than once

My Plague 9.2/10 - Very good actual song. REALLY HEAVIE. It reminds me of Oracle and Until the End because it is basicly all screaming.

Cut Throat 10/10 - A Very strong Scream/Sing Song...It has powerful instrumentals and an amazing chorus

Die My Darling 9/10 - Good song...The verses aren't great but I LOVE the chorus

Sorrow I Know 9.5/10 - Slower song but still heavy. Its more singing and is similar to the songs of Funeral for Yesturday, very nice

Forgive and Forget 10/10 - My favorite! Very good Screaming in the verses and very powerful singing in the chorus. The Instruments are strong and the lyrics are so good

Now or Never 10/10 - Another very good song. I really like the vocals because there is a mix of singing, screaming, and kinda a growl in the verses, i don't know how to describe it, but the song has a very good, strong, unique sound to it

Falling Down 8.5 - Slower and Quiter. I do like Kitties quieter songs like Charlotte, Safe, and Sweet Destruction Interlude...but this wasn't as good to me. But Kittie's not so great songs are better than most band's bests. It is good but it is lacking somthing...

Sleepwalking 9.8/10 - Very good, slower song. It is slow likt Falling Down but imo is much more powerfull. It has better lyrics and more emotion. I still think it should've been like "Safe" where it got a lot louder in the end though...

Whiskey Love Song 9.5/10 - good medium song. It's not to loud but nott too quiet...kinda like Funeral for Yesturday

Ready Aim Riot 9.5/10 - Nice and heavy. It seems like a good mosh song. The lyrics could've been a little bit better though

The Truth 10/10 - WOW! Amazing end to a great album...VERY STRONG VOCALS, there are some parts I completly for got they were female vocals. Her scream is sooo intense, probably one of her best yet. Her singing in the chorus is also outstanding. The guitars are also very heavy and visious, great way to end strong.

All in all, great work Kittie. This album definetly gets an A or A-

Rebirth after the Funeral

I loved "Funeral for Yesterday" but sometimes that album felt like a bit of a depressing slog (not surprising, considering the stuff they were going through at the time). "In The Black" sees Kittie returning to and perfecting the hard-driving angry stomp of "Oracle" and "Until The End." The songs on this album are fast, heavy and exciting, and you can tell that the band members are having fun playing them (something that I haven't felt since "Spit.") The tight and focused musicianship on this album is astounding and puts every other band out there, metal or otherwise, to shame. I'm really glad that Kittie have survived their personal and professional demons and are still around making great music!

HOLY SH...

i thought this band died in 2007... but they have just proved to me that this is their sickest album, this is their heaviest album, this is their BEST album. worth the moneys!

Biography

Formed: 1997 in Ontario, Canada

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Schoolgirls Mercedes Lander (drums) and Fallon Bowman (guitar) met in gym class and said, "Let's play together!" And thus, Kittie was born. At least, that's how legend has it, and it's not that far from the truth. Four teenage girls with a love of heavy metal, a desire to prove naysayers wrong, and a passion to rock formed the hard-sounding metal-esque quartet in 1997 while still in high school. One part glam rock and one part death metal, the women of Kittie signed with the NG Records-distributed...
