iTunes Review

Athens, Georgia’s Whigs perform ‘80s-‘90s college radio rock with an ‘00s twist of the production knobs. Animal Collective producer Ben Allen expands the band’s sonic width, making the guitars churn with an arena-rock scope and swamping the lead vocals in layers of echo, while the actual riffs come as ragged and right as Paul Westerberg and the Replacements. The harmonies recall the refined mystical pop of early R.E.M., who they may or may not be replying to in the captivating “I Don’t Even Care About The One I Love.” “Hundred / Million” kicks things off with an industrial edge to the band’s jungle trudge. “Kill Me Carolyne” features a chiming guitar battle. “I Am for Real” takes their nearly dissonant guitar riffs and set them to a dance groove. Singer-guitarist Parker Gispert has a lot of old school rock ‘n’ roll in his heart and it comes blazing through the cool slink of “Automatic” and the chant-like mantra of the title track.

THE WHIGS :)

This is a fantastic album and i love they way their sound has progressed. every album has been awesome and this album is clearly influenced by the time they spent on tour with kings of leon. which was insane by the way. Kill me carolyne reminds me of sex on fire and will be soon be really popular. I love this band and cant wait to see them in philly with the band of skulls :)

If you dont want the whole album get in the dark, kill me carolyne, black lotus,so lonely, and hundred/million. but i highly recomend this album and mission control to whoever is interested. THIS BAND ROCKS

Growing on me

I'll admit, after my first listen, I was left feeling a little disappointed. In the Dark is a bit different than the previous to records. But after a couple more plays I began to appreciate and recognize how bloody AWESOME this album is. They are definitely heading in the right direction. I hope they get the recognition they deserve!

A Ridiculous Deal

Only 6.99?? You must be legally insane! There's no way that this quality of an album is selling at that measly price. I feel like I am ripping off the band! This thing is filled with such an interesting and exciting sound that really isn't replicated anywhere. I heard from an interview with Parker that they are being compared to The Replacements of olden times but I really don't see how that is possible - they sound and play in a highly unique way. Some classify them as southern, some say they are indie, some say hard rock... But I really can't see them classified as any of those. I just know that this album kicks major tail. The only disappointment that I skip through quickly is "Someone's Daughter" as the lyrics feel a little generic and forced personally.

Else as expected the title track "In the Dark", "Hundred / Million", and "Carolyne" to be knockouts as they all were. Though truly amazing were "Black Lotus", "I Don't Even Care About The One I love", "Automatic", and "I am for Real". Those pleasant surprises by the band truly make this album a giveaway at $6.99 -> still an unfathomable price for me.

Frontman Parker Gispert, drummer Julian Dorio, and bassist Hank Sullivant formed the Whigs in 2002, while the three Athens-based musicians were attending college at the University of Georgia.
